Programme description
The bachelor’s programme ‘Russian History’ (with additional qualifications "Teacher of history and social studies" / "Teacher of additional education") is designed to foster traditional values in students, develop competencies to analyse Russian and World history, the historical process as a whole, and the role of individuals within it, and the cultural achievements as a result of historical development. A special focus is on cultivating students’ research skills to work with historical sources. Field practice and internships at partner organisations are to ensure alignment with the labour market.
Upon completing the programme graduates will be awarded three diplomas of St Petersburg University: a higher education diploma and a professional retraining diplomas: bachelor’s degree, teacher of history and social studies and teacher of additional education.

- Professor Andrey Dvornichenko — Doctor of historical sciences, Head of the Department of Russian history from the earliest times to the 20th Century, a leading researcher in the history of ancient and medieval Russia, Editor-in-Chief of the "Vestnik of Saint Petersburg University. History" scientific journal (indexed in Web of Science (Core Collection) and Scopus databases).
- Professor Mikhail Khodyakov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Modern Russian History at St Petersburg University, Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, a specialist in political and socio-economic history of Russia in the 20th-century, Editor-in-Chief of the interdisciplinary scientific journal "Modern History of Russia" (indexed in Scopus database).
- Professor Gennady Sobolev — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honorary Professor of St Petersburg University, a leading expert on history of the Russian revolutions and defence of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945). Professor is also a founder of a scientific community for historians studying Russian revolutions and the Russian Civil War.
- Professor Aleksei Sirenov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the St Petersburg Institute of History at the Russian Academy of Sciences, specialist in Russian medieval history
- Professor Vladimir Baryshnikov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at SPbU, specialist in history of Scandinavian countries and Finland
- Professor Andrey Prokopyev — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Middle Ages History at SPbU, specialist in history of Germany and Europe in Middle Ages
- Professor Vladimir Pyankevich — Doctor of historical Sciences, Head of the Department of History of Nations of Commonwealth of Independent States at SPbU. Research interests of Professor Pyankevich include social and economic history of Russia in the 20th century, as well as history of the Siege of Leningrad
- Professor Yuri Krivosheev — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of Historical Regional Studies at SPbU, specialist in Russian history of the 12th—16th centuries. Professor Krivosheev also founded school of studying history of the Russian regions
- Professor Sergei Kashchenko — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Honorary Professor of St Petersburg University, Honoured Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Head of the Source Studies of Russian History Department at SPbU. Research interests of Professor Kashchenko include socio-economic and political issues of the 18th — early 20th centuries in Russian history, massive sources on Russia’s agrarian reforms of 1861, and historical demography of Russia.
- Professor Aleksandr Filyushkin — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of History of Slavic and Balkan Countries at SPbU, member of the Editorial Board of "Russian History" journal and Editor-in-Chief of the " Studia Slavica et Balcanica Petropolitana" journal. His research interests include history of peoples and states in Central Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages and the early Modern Period
- Professor Andrey Golovnyov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expert in ethnology and history of Northern Eurasia, methodology of history and anthropology, as well as in visual anthropology.
- Aleksei Novozhilov — PhD in History, Docent, Head of the Department of Ethnography and Anthropology at St Petersburg University, expert in transformation of traditional cultures of Eastern Europe peoples.
- Professor Oleg Klimov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Ancient Greek and Roman History at St Petersburg University. Professor Klimov specialises in the Hellenistic period of Greek history and Hellenistic culture.
- Denis Tsypkin— PhD in History, Docent, Head of the Department of Western European and Russian Cultural History at St Petersburg University. D. Tsypkin is an expert in interdisciplinary research of written and printed monuments, examining of historical records, codicology, paleography, historical anthropology, and the methodology of historical-cultural research.
Our Advantages
Graduates of the programme will be able to apply the acquired knowledge (primarily in the field of Russian history) across various areas of history as a science, as well as apply their skills and personal qualities in real practice and career.
