- The bachelor’s programme ‘Mathematics and Computer Science’ is aimed at students who are interested in receiving a fundamental mathematical education with in-depth studying of applications and practical issues
- The programme is designed to provide students with comprehensive training in higher mathematics and computer science, and to develop their abilities for research and scientific activity. This activity is expected in those areas of science that are critical in modern society – not only in fundamental mathematics and computer science, but also in the multidisciplinary fields that are based on them. These include: control theory; optimisation; data analysis; mathematical modelling; robotics; and breakthrough technologies of machine learning and artificial intelligence
- A thoughtful combination of educational courses from several areas of knowledge results in the development of an interdisciplinary programme. It is fundamentally different from existing bachelor’s programmes in mathematics and in computer science. This programme is unique in that it provides successful applications in social, engineering, and natural sciences
- Our students master mathematical models of various natural and technical systems; learn to understand information and calculations as their integral parts; get acquainted with fundamental problems that have long-term practical applications; and also study the correlations between historically separate disciplines
- The careers of our graduates can be related to: research activities or teaching in various fields of mathematics; as well as the development of algorithmic and software applications for science and industry
Teaching staff
- A. Fradkov – Doctor of Technical Sciences, SPbU Professor, Head of the ‘Control of Complex Systems’ Laboratory at Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences, founding President of the International Physics and Control Society (IPACS). He has authored over 600 scholarly works and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal ‘Cybernetics and Physics’. Professor Fradkov is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow and an International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Fellow. Between 1991 and 2016, he delivered invited lectures at seventy universities and research centres across twenty-two countries, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Institute of Science Tokyo, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Australian National University, Seoul National University, University of Illinois and University of Michigan, alongside such research centres as Bell Lab, Fermilab, CINVESTAV, KAIST, CNRS, INRIA and others
- S. Ermakov – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Statistical Modelling Department at Saint-Petersburg University, recipient of the USSR State Prize. Professor Ermakov is a pioneer of modern radiation protection methods and founder of the St Petersburg School of Experimental Design. He is prominent specialist in stochastic computation and its applications. With over 270 scholarly publications to his credit, he has supervised 50 Candidates of Science and 9 Doctors of Science in computational mathematics and mathematical modelling
- N. Shirokov – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor. His research interests include: geometric function theory, approximation theory, factorisation problems and boundary behaviour of analytic functions in various spaces. He is the author of the monograph ‘Analytic Functions Smooth up to the Boundary’ originally published in 1988 by Springer as part of their famous ‘Lecture Notes in Mathematics’ series and reissued in 2014
- A. Baranov – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, SPbU Professor. His research interests encompass theory of functions of a complex variable, harmonic analysis, and operator theory. He has authored more than fifty research publications
- O. Vinogradov – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, SPbU Professor. His research interests include theory of approximation of functions of a real variable. Professor Vinogradov has authored 90+ research papers, including textbook series on mathematical analysis
- K. Kokhas – Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, SPbU Associate Professor. He specialises in asymptotic representation theory and asymptotic combinatorics. He has published over forty scholarly works and authored a series of problem books for the St Petersburg Mathematical Olympiad
- D. Lutsiv – Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, SPbU Associate Professor. His research interests encompass natural language processing, database systems, programming languages and compilers. He has authored over twenty research publications
- S. Vostokov – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor. He is a recipient of the P. Chebyshev Prize in Mathematics and Physics. In 2014 Professor Vostokov was awarded jointly by the St Petersburg Government and the St Petersburg Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He founded and leads scientific school of constructive class field theory. He was a member of the Berlin 'Arbeitsgruppe' at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn (1994-1999). Professor Vostokov has organised several international number theory scientific conferences at the Euler International Mathematical Institute in St Petersburg and authored over 100 publications, including the monograph ‘Local Fields and Their Extensions: A Constructive Approach’ (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1993).
