Programme description
The bachelor’s programme ‘General History (with the additional qualifications ‘Teacher of History and Social Science’ / ‘Teacher of Additional Education’) educates students in the spirit of traditional values, and develops a skills set that makes it possible to be versed in: general history; the historically determined features of the development of Western civilisation; the historical process as a whole and man’s place in it; and achievements of world culture as a result of historical development.
The programme also focuses on the history of Russia and its interaction with Western countries. During the training, students will acquire comprehensive knowledge of the historical development of the countries and peoples of Europe, North and South America, and Australia, as well as their relations with Asian and African communities and Russia.
The programme includes an in-depth study of global phenomena such as colonialism, imperialism, decolonisation, nation-building, the formation of parties and civil society, globalisation, and integration. The programme also focuses on developing students’ research skills of working with historical records. Field research practices and internships at partner organisations provide professional market-oriented activities.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the additional qualifications ‘Teacher of History and Social Science’ and ‘Teacher of Additional Education’.

His research focuses on the history of the peoples and states of Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
- Vladimir Vasilik, Professor, Doctor of History, Candidate of Philology, Laureate of the Golden Names of Higher School Award (2024). His research focuses on the history of Byzantium, the history of the medieval Kingdom of Bulgaria, the Kingdom of Serbia, the history of Yugoslavian literacy, and the ecclesiastical history of the South Slavs.
- Oksana Kulishova, Professor, Doctor of History, expert in the history of ancient Greece and the history of ancient culture, particularly the history of ancient Greek theatre. She is the author of books on the history of the famous religious centre of ancient Greece — the Temple of Apollo at Delphi — and a monograph on ancient Greek theatre.
- Larisa Pechatnova, Professor, Doctor of History, expert in the history of ancient Greece, particularly the history of Sparta. She is the author of a number of monographs on Spartan history and the author of the only Russian translation of Xenophon’s The Lacedaemonion Politeia.
- Oleg Plenkov, Professor, Doctor of History, one of Russia’s leading Germanists, expert in twentieth-century German history, the history of World War II, and the history of twentieth-century social thought
- Anatolii Smolin, Professor, Doctor of History, expert in the history of Europe and international relations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and researcher on revolutionary and social movements in the first quarter of the 20th century and Russian emigration

- Tatiana Goncharova, Associate Professor, Candidate of History, expert in the history of France from the 18th to 20th centuries, the Restoration and the July Monarchy (1814–1848), and the history of French diplomacy in the 19th century
- Sergey Zhestokanov, Associate Professor, Candidate of History, a renowned expert in the history of ancient Greece, particularly the Archaic period, including the history of early Greek tyranny. He is the author of a number of articles on Archaic Greek history and translations of sources on early Greek tyranny.
- Marina Dmitrieva, Associate Professor, Candidate of History, one of the leading experts in the history of medieval culture and the Church, the European Renaissance and Humanism, and the history of Italy and the medieval city
- Aleksey Panteleev, Associate Professor, Candidate of History, expert in the religious and cultural history of the ancient world and the history of ancient Christianity, including the problem of early Christian martyrdom. He is the author of monographs and chapters in multi-authored monographs, translations of works on early Christian martyrs, as well as a translation of Arthur Darbi Nock’s monograph on the religion of the ancient world.
