Programme description
The master’s programme ‘Cultural Linguistics of Great Britain and the USA’ is designed for graduates with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics/Philology, or a related subject in the social sciences or humanities. The programme provides students with knowledge of: the national distinctness of the English language; historical, geopolitical and cultural features of Great Britain and the USA; and behavioural, gender, status and age characteristics of speech activity of their citizens as representatives of culture of the English-speaking society.

Our advantages
- The programme is taught in English and aimed at developing high-level competences in: the practical use of English; its teaching; and translation and interpreting. Graduates of the programme are fluent in English and have an in-depth knowledge of the historical, geopolitical and sociocultural specifics of the United Kingdom and the United States. This will contribute to successful communication and career development in any professional field involving intercultural interaction: business, politics, education, science, tourism, media communications, translation/interpreting, and teaching

- The pedagogical component of the programme develops the necessary competencies and enables graduates to teach courses related to the aforementioned theoretical areas, as well as practical English, translation and interpreting

Teaching staff
- Elizaveta Khomyakova, Doctor of Philology, Professor; author of over 100 scholarly publications and the executive editor of several multi-authored monographs devoted to issues in English studies and linguoculturology; a leading specialist in research into the interaction of language and culture. She has completed internships in the United Kingdom and Spain, and has worked as a visiting professor at the University of Sheffield (Great Britain). She has supervised 15 candidates for the degree of Candidate of Philology. She is a member of the Russian Cognitive Linguists Association
- Igor Tolochin, Doctor of Philology, Professor; author of 70 scholarly papers. He completed internships at Merton College, Oxford (1991), and Bell College, Saffron Walden (1992), Université de Lausanne (1991, 1992), Summer School of Criticism and Theory (Dartmouth College) (1993), Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington, DC (1996), English Department, San Angelo State University, Texas (2006). He delivers a number of uniquely designed courses in English. He has supervised nine candidates for the degree of Candidate of Philology
- Еkaterina Troshchenkova, Doctor of Philology, Professor; author of more than 90 scholarly papers; a leading specialist in research into socio-political discourse and communicative strategies of influence; Member of the Russian Cognitive Linguists Association. She supervises candidate dissertations. She is a member of the organising committee of the Open Conference for Philology Students at St. Petersburg State University
- Olga Emelianova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor; author of more than 80 publications. She has completed an internship at the University of Leeds (Great Britain). She is a leading specialist in research into the value system of the English-speaking world and the ‘us–them’ opposition
- Natalia Magnes, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor; author of more than 30 publications; a leading specialist in gender linguistics. She supervises candidate dissertations
- Tatiana Petukhova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor; author of 70 papers; expert in research into the pragmatic and cognitive aspects of art history and artistic discourses; Member of the organising committee of the International Philological Conference at St. Petersburg State University; Member of the Russian Cognitive Linguists Association
