Citing AI-generated Text (MLA Style)

Students should acknowledge when they have used generative artificial intelligence in the creation of material. The official position from referencing style guides on how to cite AI technologies is still developing. In the meantime, we suggest the following format, based on the MLA page for citing artificial intelligence. Note that it includes the prompt that was used to generate the text.

Most AI tools now allow users to copy a "share" link to allow others to see their conversation with the chatbot. You may ask students to do so as part of their citation of AI-generated content.
