General Information
Where do I register for my IEP course?
Registration for the Intensive English Program (IEP) can be done in room 1037, Department of English Language Instruction, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Hall (HUSS), AUC New Cairo.
Once admitted to the IEP, do I have to take all the courses in sequence, or can I skip a course?
It is possible for students to skip a course depending on performance throughout the semester and the end of semester results.
Can I take credit-bearing courses in addition to my IEP English classes?
The IEP is a full-time non-credit intensive English for academic purposes course. No other courses may be taken concurrently with an IEP course.
How long will it take me to complete the IEP?
This depends on your performance throughout the semester and your end-of-semester final results. Most students exit the level they are placed in in one semester. Some strong students who work very hard may be able to skip a level. You can spend up to one academic year in the IEP, normally two semesters and a summer session.
How will I be graded in the IEP?
Final assessment will be based on a series of tasks, a final test and teacher evaluations. The tasks will be administered during the second half of the semester, and the final test will be administered during final exam week. Teacher evaluations will be based on student performance on assignments in and out of class throughout the semester.
What does an IP grade mean?
An IP (In Progress) grade is given when students progress from ELIN 0101 to ELIN 0102. An IP grade is also given when students have to repeat the same course because they did not achieve the required level to pass. Students are allowed to receive an IP grade two times. If they don’t pass the course on the third try, they will be disqualified from AUC but may apply for readmission. Students in the IEP are allowed a maximum of two semesters and a summer (or three semesters if no summer session is offered) to pass the course.
What does a Fail grade mean?
An F grade means that a student has taken the course three times and has not met the requirements to proceed to the next level. The student must withdraw, and in order to be readmitted to AUC, the student must reapply with a recent English placement exam (TOEFL or IELTS) and score above the level of the IEP.
How will I know at what level I am performing throughout the semester?
Your teacher will be giving you detailed feedback throughout the semester and will indicate the level at which you are performing based on your test scores and active participation in the course. This assessment/feedback is based on class work and a series of tests administered throughout the semester. You will also be given a midterm evaluation by your teachers. This evaluation will reflect your level at midterm.

Do I have to attend every class session in an IEP course?
In order for students to improve their English proficiency to an advanced level as quickly as possible, regular attendance is critical for their success. Active involvement in activities and completion of homework assignments are also critical factors for success. Because of the intensive nature of our program, it is often impossible to make up for what has been missed. Students who know in advance that they will miss classes may, with the teacher’s permission, make arrangements to make up their missed classes. In all cases, students are responsible for missed material and assignments. They should find out what they missed and what they need to prepare for the following class.
\ Each class period that students do not attend is counted. If students are not in class on time or are unprepared, they will also be considered absent and their teacher may choose not to allow them in. As university students, learners are responsible for keeping this policy in mind. Therefore, students should be careful not to miss classes unnecessarily. The total allowable class hours of absence during the semester should be used only in case of illness, urgent business or other emergencies.
What happens if I have to miss an exam?
If a student has to miss an exam for any reason, the student should contact his/her teacher in advance. A make-up exam can only be allowed with the permission of the IEP director.
What if I am late to class? How is that counted?
Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Students who are allowed to enter class up to 30 minutes late will be counted absent for half an hour; after that, they will be counted absent for one hour.
What happens if I hand in my assignments late?
For learning to be effective, it is important that you budget your time carefully. Students must respect deadlines and hand in their work on time. Students who submit late assignments run the risk of losing marks and/or not having their work counted/graded. Students should check with their teachers about policies on late assignments.
If I miss a couple of deadlines, can I hand in the work all at once?
Generally speaking, students are not allowed to hand in a series of late assignments unless they have obtained the necessary permission from their teachers prior to the assignment deadline.
If I need to report some form of unfairness or appeal a grade, is there a complaint procedure?
If a student has a complaint about alleged unfair or improper treatment in a course or about any other academic matter, the issue should be discussed first with the faculty member responsible for the course in question. If the issue is not resolved at that level, the undergraduate student should discuss the complaint with the IEP director if enrolled in ELIN 0101 or ELIN 0102. Refer to the IEP website for the ELI student grievance process. If the issue is still not resolved, the student should follow the AUC Grievance and Appeal Process for Student Concerns.
