Intensive English Program (IEP) Assessment Framework
Your final assessment is based on a series of standardized tasks and teacher evaluations. The tasks are administered during the second half of the semester. Teacher evaluations are based on your performance throughout the semester. You will be assessed in the following two components: A and B. Each of these components has a different passing score (see IEP Proficiency Framework below). All tasks are graded by teachers using clearly defined criteria. Your teachers will explain these criteria to you.
Assessment Tasks
Writing Component (Total Writing Score: 100%)
Students writing skills will be assessed based on standardized tasks and teacher evaluation of ongoing performance throughout the semester.
Other Skills Component (Total score on all components other than writing: 100%)
Students will be assessed other skills, including reading and vocabulary use, speaking, listening, and project skills, based on standardized tasks during the second half of the semester, as well as teacher evaluation of ongoing performance throughout the semester.
IEP Undergraduate Proficiency Scale
At the end of each semester, your placement will be based on your performance on the IEP assessment framework according to the table below.

At the end of the semester, if a student places into a level (ENGL 0210 or RHET 1010) on either the total or the writing, but not on both, scores that are one percent below the cut-off qualify for the borderline committee’s consideration.
Teacher Evaluations
Teacher evaluations are based on class participation, class work and homework.
Mid-term evaluations are given in October for the fall semester and March for the spring semester. Although these do not count toward final grades, they are an opportunity for teachers to inform the students of their progress and give useful feedback.
Final evaluations are counted toward the students' final placement.
Grades on Banner Self-Service
On Banner Self-Service, you will receive one of the following grades: P (Pass), IP (In Progress), or F (Fail)
What does a P grade mean?
A P (Pass) grade is given when students progress to ENGL 0210 or RHET 1010.
What does an IP grade mean?
An IP (In Progress) grade is given when students progress from ELIN 0101 to ELIN 0102. An IP grade is also given when students have to repeat the same course because they did not achieve the required level to pass. Students are allowed to receive an IP grade two times. If they don’t pass the course on the third try, they will be disqualified from AUC but may apply for readmission. Students in the IEP are allowed a maximum of two semesters and a summer (or three semesters if no summer session is offered) to pass the course.
What does a F grade mean?
An F (Fail) grade means that a student has taken the course three times and has not met the requirements to proceed to the next level. In order to be readmitted to AUC, students must reapply with a recent English placement exam (TOEFL or IELTS) and score above the level of the IEP.
