SumRA teaches students the research process and exposes them to various academic inquiry cultures. They learn to formulate research questions, choose appropriate methods for gathering and analyzing evidence, and effectively present their work to specific audiences. By engaging critically with these elements, students craft informed research proposals that adhere to academic writing conventions.

SumRA introduces students to the process of research and the different cultures of inquiry in diverse academic disciplines. Students explore various types of research questions, making decisions about the most appropriate approach to collecting evidence, conducting analysis, organizing and presenting their work to particular discourse communities. Through this critical approach, students develop a well-informed and insightful research proposal which demonstrates understanding of the processes and conventions of writing in academic contexts.
