\
Before exploring program options, students should first review the [Factors to Consider webpage](https://www.aucegypt.edu/factors-consider).\

## Exchange Program

**About the Exchange Program**

- Option to study abroad at a host university made possible by a bilateral agreement between AUC and the host university
- Students pay the standardized fees of the exchange program equivalent to **15 credit hours**
- Students are responsible for any other costs related to the program (e.g., housing, visas, etc.)
- [AUC scholarships](https://www.aucegypt.edu/admissions/scholarships) often apply to the cost of AUC tuition applied during an exchange program
- Students are eligible to apply for the [AUC study abroad scholarships](https://www.aucegypt.edu/admissions/scholarships/exchange-and-study-abroad)
- [Partner universities](https://www.aucegypt.edu/list-partner-universities) are already pre-approved by the International Programs and Services Office (IPSO)
- Availability is competitive and based on:
  - Validity of agreement between AUC and the partner university
  - Number of spaces per each host university

## Direct Enroll

**About Direct Enroll**

Students directly apply to any university for a semester/year abroad.

- Tuition is based on the host university rates
- Students get to choose their university/program of choice
- Students must request approval from IPSO during the study abroad application cycle to ensure the partner university is vetted and an accredited university
- Financial aid and AUC scholarships do not apply to expenses or tuition fees at host university
- Students must apply for an official [leave of absence](https://lfweb.aucegypt.edu/LFDSSTS/Login?originalPathAndQuery=%2fLFDSSTS%2f%3fwa%3dwsignin1.0%26wtrealm%3dhttps%253a%252f%252flfweb.aucegypt.edu%252fForms%252f%26wctx%3drm%253d0%2526id%253dd92273b5-0457-44d1-a8d8-90a4b71e056a%2526ru%253dhttps%25253a%25252f%25252flfweb.aucegypt.edu%25252fForms%25252fLOARequest%26wct%3d2024-12-09T12%253a33%253a15Z%26whr%3durn%253alaserfiche%253alfdsdb%253aRIODB%26wreply%3dhttps%253a%252f%252flfweb.aucegypt.edu%252fForms%252f) before the deadline prior to departure for the semester they will be studying

\
Students can study abroad during either the fall or spring semester or during the summer term.

| Semester | Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fall or Spring | - Longer duration in host country (maximize funds spent for costs like airfare) - AUC exchange scholarship is available | - May pose difficult to be away for longer duration if there are other commitments (family, work, etc.) - Longer planning time for courses and requirements |
| Summer | - Shorter duration so may be more cost effective - May have flexibility to find courses | - Less exchange options available - AUC exchange scholarship not available for summer |
