It is possible to pursue a doctoral degree at all eleven faculties of the University of Freiburg. In addition to the „classical“ form of individual doctoral studies, the university offers a large selection of structured doctoral programmes in various areas. Here you may find an overview of all doctoral subjects, the doctoral degree regulations as well as faculty contacts.
The interests of all doctoral candidates are represented by the doctoral candidate councils of the faculties as well as three representatives in the university senate. Respective contact persons can be found on the homepage of the joint working committee.
In the following, we will inform you about the steps required for new doctoral candidates, from the supervision confirmation to enrolment at the university as well as the offers and opportunities available to all doctoral candidates at the University of Freiburg.

The Graduate Centre (GraCe) regularly organises the welcome event Doc On! for all new doctoral candidates at the University of Freiburg. We would like to support you right from the start in establishing contacts with other doctoral candidates and building up your research network. An overview of other services offered by GraCe – the central service centre for doctoral candidates at the University of Freiburg – can be found on their homepage.
Doctoral candidates who have an employment contract at the University of Freiburg are cordially invited to attend the Introductory Event for New Employees. Employees can also find further services on the University’s intranet page New to the University.
The Welcome Service of the International Office supports international doctoral candidates with questions on non-academic matters (e.g. visa, accommodation or registration with the city).

Introductory Event for New Employees
You can find helpful tips and suggestions on how to make your doctorate a success together with your supervisors and what challenges and hurdles to consider along the way by visiting our page on the Culture of Supervision. We also have compiled information on Good Research Practice in the doctoral phase for you.
Step 1: Supervision approval
First, you must receive confirmation for supervision by a person authorized for doctoral supervision (see § 5 Absatz 3 der Rahmenpromotionsordnung [RPO]).
Step 2: Conclusion of a supervision agreement
Immediately after the supervision confirmation, a doctoral supervision agreement between you and your supervisor must be concluded. For this, please download the relevant template from your faculty´s homepage.

Step 3: Central registration and acceptance as doctoral candidate by the faculty
The approval as a doctoral candidate should follow shortly after the conclusion of the doctoral supervision agreement. For this, please use the online application for approval as a doctoral candidate (DOC502) through the Campus Management System HISinOne, preferably within six weeks of the conclusion of the dissertation agreement. After handing in the printed application together with the supporting documents, the doctoral examination board will decide on your application. The decision will be communicated in writing and, in the case of a rejection, justified (§ 7 Absatz 3 Satz 3 RPO).
Step 4: Enrollment/exemption
After being accepted as a doctoral candidate by the faculty, you must enroll at the Service Center Studium (see § 38 Absatz 5, Satz 1, erster Halbsatz des Landeshochschulgesetzes [LHG]). Enrollment is compulsory for all doctoral candidates that were accepted as candidates at the University of Freiburg after March 30th 2018. Doctoral candidates whose main employer is the University of Freiburg (employment contract for at least half of a full-time position) can be exempt from compulsory enrollment according to § 38 Absatz 5 Satz 1, zweiter Halbsatz LHG. All doctoral candidates that have already been accepted as a doctoral candidate before March 30th 2018 are entitled to enrollment, but are not obligated to do so.
