BAföG and disability/illness
BAföG, which is also the primary source of financial support for students with disabilities who do not have sufficient funds of their own, provides various compensation options for this target group. For example, in certain cases, the age limit may be exceeded due to disability or illness. A delay in studies may also be claimed. Please discuss your situation with your contact person at the BAföG office as early as possible.

Exemption from study fees
Tuition fees are charged for second degrees and degrees for international students. Students with a significant disability that hinders their studies in accordance with Section 2 of SGB IX can be exempted from these fees
Leave of absence
Students who are on leave of absence due to a longer period of illness are not entitled to BAföG during this time. Please note that any BAföG benefits already received for this period must be repaid. If your studies are interrupted due to illness for a period longer than 3 months, you may be entitled to receive “Bürgergeld”.

Care and health insurance
Students enrolled at state or state-recognised universities are required to have health and nursing care insurance. Choosing the right health insurance provider is particularly important for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, as the scope of benefits can vary greatly. Find out all you can about health and nursing care insurance. Check to what extent you can finance disability-related medical care through health insurance benefits. Contact the health insurance companies and compare their range of services. Also clarify whether an accident insurance provider or the pension office may be liable for benefits. \ \ You can obtain advice on nursing care and health insurance from the social counselling service of the Studierendenwerk.

“Assistance with living expenses” under SGB XII for students who are temporarily unable to work
\ If students are temporarily, but foreseeably, unable to work for more than six months due to illness or disability, they can apply for assistance with living expenses under certain conditions if they are recognised as being in need of assistance.
