Application Requirements

GPA and Language requirements Unlike many other universities, NCKU does not apply a standard GPA or language requirement for all incoming exchange students. Instead, these requirements vary by department and are specified in the Department Requirements for Exchange Students for the relevant academic year. Applications not meeting a department’s specified requirements may be rejected by the reviewing department. We accept the listed types of English language certifications, as well as TOCFL or HSK for Chinese.

\  Required Application Materials

Passport photo A recent, passport-sized color photo of the applicant.
Passport’s information page Color scan of the passport’s information page.
Enrollment Certificate Official certificate issued by the home university, with an official stamp.
Transcript Full official transcript of all completed semesters at the home university, stamped by the university.
Autobiography A brief introduction of your background, academic journey, and other relevant information.
Study plan No fixed format. Recommended to include a list of courses you plan to take at NCKU.
Recommendation letters Letters must include the referees’ full name, title, and signature.
Financial statement Proof of sufficient funds: ▪ NT$50,000 for one semester, or NT$100,000 for one academic year. ▪ Must be issued by a bank or financial institution and include the applicant’s full name.
Language Certificate(s) Valid certificate(s) of Chinese and/or English proficiency (e.g., TOCFL, HSK, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
Confirmation Page Downloaded at the final step of the online application submission process.
Other documents Any additional documents required by the specific department or program.
To be noted: 1. All documents must be clear, color scans of the originals and uploaded to the online application portal by the application deadline. 2. Please follow the language requirements specified by each department. If no specific language is required, submit the documents in English.

Language of Instruction Primarily Chinese, with some courses offered in English as a supplement.

Navigating Course Options Academic Year System: NCKU’s academic year 114 corresponds to AY2025–2026 (calculated by adding 1911 to the Western year). Semester Terms: Semester 1 is Fall; Semester 2 is Spring. Course Selection Tips: 1. You may take courses from other departments, school years, or academic levels, unless restricted. 2. Restrictions may include course tags (e.g., COURSERA, which is reserved for local students) or specific notes such as prerequisites or limited eligibility based on program/module. 3. Use the "Courses Taught in English" filter to find English-taught courses.
Chinese Language Course Exchange students may enroll in a credit-bearing Chinese language course (2 hours per week) based on their placement test results. Enrollment instructions will be provided during the registration period. Students may also choose to join optional seasonal Chinese language programs offered by the NCKU Language Center (15 hours per week, with additional fees).

Living costs Estimated total for one semester (approx. 18 weeks): €1,700–€2,300, including: - Accommodation: €500–€1,400 - Food: ~€1,050 - Other expenses: ~€150
Housing Exchange students can apply for on-campus housing in one of three dormitories. For details, see the Accommodation section in the Pre-Arrival Guidebook for Exchange Students.
Entry regulations Visa types and entry requirements are outlined in the NCKU Pre-Arrival Guidebook for Exchange Students.
Health Insurance Private Overseas Insurance: Exchange students are required to purchase private overseas insurance in their home country, covering health and accident for the entire exchange period. NCKU Student Group Insurance: All students are required to enroll in NCKU’s student group insurance upon registration, which covers only severe accidents. The cost is approximately NT$250 per semester. (NCKU Terms of Group Insurance Contract for Students)
Health Exam Students must submit a health examination report and vaccination certificate during NCKU registration following the indications in the NCKU Pre-Arrival Guidebook for Exchange Students.

Academic workload - At NCKU, 1 credit = 1 lecture hour/week, totaling at least 18 hours per semester. - Exchange students must fulfill the academic requirements of the department they are enrolled to.
Transcript of records (ToR) - Digital ToRs will be sent to the partner university coordinator approximately 4–6 weeks after the semester ends. - ToRs will not be sent directly to students.
