Grow beyond the lecture halls.
At the University of Twente, you will find plenty of opportunities to develop yourself. As one of the most entrepreneurial universities in the Netherlands, we encourage students to take an active part in student life – both on campus and in the city of Enschede. Students organise a wide range of activities, creating a vibrant and welcoming community.
Boost your personal development
By getting involved outside your studies – for example in a student association or team – you’ll build skills like leadership, taking initiative, and collaborating with people from different disciplines. These are valuable experiences you won’t find in textbooks, but they are essential for your professional future. Employers highly value this kind of social and organisational development.
On the Student Union website, you can explore how to grow alongside your studies – whether it’s through volunteering at an association, taking on a part-time job, or starting your own business. One of their key goals is to give students the opportunity to strengthen their skills and competencies.
Honours programmes
Does studying come easily to you and are you looking for an extra challenge? If you rank among the top 10% of your programme, our Honours programmes are for you. You follow this programme alongside your bachelor’s degree, gaining extra depth, research opportunities, and training in skills like critical thinking and leadership. It’s a great way to better prepare yourself for a scientific career or a challenging job.
Multidisciplinary student teams
The University of Twente has dozens of student initiatives. Students can get involved in organising symposiums, tournaments or exchange trips and they can even start their own company. Our multidisciplinary student teams are excellent examples of extracurricular activities that successfully combine a university education and research. Student teams such as HyDriven and Solar Boat Twente are well-known initiatives. These teams bring students together to build, for example, a solar car, electric superbike, drone or robot, with which they regularly compete against teams from other universities all over the world.
The best-known student teams at UT:
- Biosensing Team Twente\ Annually develop a biosensor for a health application. Aims to translate pioneering UT research into market-ready technologies.
- DroneTeam Twente\ Puts innovation in the air while preparing fellow students to become the leaders of tomorrow’s drone industry by partaking in international competitions.
- Electric Superbike Twente\ Builds an electric superbike with the goal to reach MotoGP lap times and shows that electric racing is not only sustainable, but also extremely exciting.
- Esports Team Twente\ A professional esports organisation active in various esports titles. Not only are they active in international competitions, they also perform state of the art research and data-analysis on esports and gaming.
- HyDriven\ The student team from the University of Twente and Saxion that builds the world’s most efficient hydrogen car – and raises awareness about hydrogen and sustainability.
- RISE\ RISE innovates in the challenges of making the space industry sustainable. With their projects they demonstrate the newest advances in biofuel technology and reusability in rocketry.
- RoboTeam Twente\ Aspires to shape the future of Artificial Intelligence by participating in the annual RoboCup challenge. In addition, the team creates awareness about robotics and AI in society by providing workshops for students at school and university levels.
- Solar Boat Twente\ Builds a boat that is powered by solar panels on its deck. The boat uses this energy very efficiently due to its light weight and foiling capabilities. With their project, they promote sustainability in the transport sector.
- Solar Team Twente\ Builds the most efficient solar car and challenges the limits of existing technology. They inspire others to become more sustainable and invest in the talents of the future.
