## Result
In this course, participants will acquire a basic knowledge of Dutch, leading them to CEF-level A1. Participants receive a certificate after successfully completing the tests at the end of the course.
## Content
The course consists almost entirely of **independent self-study** through the online learning platform Link+. There are no classes or assignments. The only deadline is to reach A1 level and pass your exams within 6 months after joining the course’s Canvas page. Your progress is not monitored, so make sure to keep an eye on your personal deadline for the course.
At the end of the course, you complete listening and reading tests on Canvas and schedule one-on-one appointments for the writing and speaking tests. **The writing test can only be done in person.**
**Please note:** a language cannot be learnt through self-study only. It is **your responsibility** to make sure you get enough practise alongside studying the materials to get to an A1 level. Get in touch with friends, classmates or colleagues to agree on regular times when you will speak Dutch with them.
Additionally, the UT Language Centre offers the following support:
*Within the course*
- Engage with other learners and teachers in optional discussion boards on the course’s Canvas page.
*General resources at UT Language Centre*
- Attend the [Dutch Language Café](https://www.utwente.nl/en/language-centre/languages/dutch/Dutch%20language-caf%C3%A9/) for conversational practice;
- Join the [Dutch Pronunciation and Grammar Walk-in Hour](https://www.utwente.nl/en/language-centre/languages/dutch/grammarwalk-in-hour/) to ask questions about specific pronunciation or grammar issues;
After passing the tests, you will be able to function in Dutch at CEF-level A1 and:
- understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type,
- introduce yourself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where someone lives, people you know and things you have,
- interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
## Duration and time investment
You will have access to the course for 6 months after joining the course’s Canvas page.
- There are 10 chapters, which each take about 4 hours of self-study.
- An additional 2 hours per chapter are recommended to practise with the new vocabulary and grammar through interactions with Dutch speakers, texts and other media.
