Why choose and EngD at UT?
An EngD combines courses with a design project in industry. You are employed as a trainee, receive a salary and work on a concrete problem that matters to a partner organisation.
You develop technical depth and project leadership, build a strong network with companies and research groups and create real impact. After graduation, many trainees move into senior roles in industry, while others continue with a PhD position.
Employment and salary
As an EngD trainee, you are employed for 24 months and receive a salary. You combine learning and earning throughout the programme.
Employed by the University of Twente\ Monthly salary, holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. Access to UT facilities for professional and personal development. Scholarships are not applicable.
Employed by a company\ Salary and conditions are set by the company, including visa and insurance. Terms may differ from UT.
What is the difference between EngD and PhD?
Both are third-cycle programmes but with different aims: EngD is practice-oriented and industry-focused. A PhD is research-oriented and university-based. The three main differences are:\ \
| EngD | PhD | |
| Duration | Two years | Four years |
| Focus | Design and application in industry | Fundamental research at the university |
| Outcome | Engineering Doctorate degree | Doctor title |
Which qualification is awarded after completing the EngD program?
After successful completion, you will be awarded the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree. EngD programmes are part of the third cycle of higher education in the Netherlands. The diploma is registered and kept by KIVI, the Royal Dutch Society of Engineers. This is not a Doctor title; you are entitled to use the degree, Engineering Doctorate, EngD.
"The flexibility the university of twente provides to pursue my EngD is phenomenal!"
