Wish to follow the Master's in Biomedical Engineering? **You might need to follow a pre-master's first.**
**After you have sent in your application** for the Master's in Biomedical Engineering, a committee will check your eligibility. An outcome of this assessment may be that you first have to complete a pre-master's before being admitted. Depending on your previous education, only one or two specialisations are possible to start after a pre-master's.
What is a pre-master's?
A pre-master's is a transfer programme for students of a **Dutch university of applied sciences ('hbo' in Dutch)** or a**research university** who cannot be admitted directly to the master's they wish to follow. The goal is to bridge the gap between your current bachelor's (in a related field) and your future master's. Once you have successfully completed the pre-master's, you will be admitted to the master's. [Learn more about pre-master's in general](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/pre-masters/).
The Pre-Master's for Biomedical Engineering is taught mainly in **Dutch** and partly in **English**. The costs of the Pre-Master's depends on the amount of EC of your programme. You pay a fee per EC, and, depending on your previous education, the Pre-Master's programme for Biomedical Engineering varies to a maximum of 60 EC. Each academic year, the amount per EC will be reassessed. [Visit the tuition page](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/programmes/computer-science/finance/) for the current fees. The deadline for a pre-master application is the 1st of June. For the individual pre-masters and questions, you can contact the study adviser via [studyadviser-bmt@utwente.nl](mailto:studyadviser-bmt@utwente.nl).
## What applies to you?
Do you want to get insights into the Pre-Master's? The programme you need to take depends on your previous or current education, as well as the specialisation you will follow. **What kind of education do or did you follow?**
University of applied sciences (Dutch HBO)
If you followed a (sufficiently related) bachelor's at a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO), it is mandatory to follow a pre-master's first to prepare you for this Master's. If you manage to successfully complete this Pre-Master’s within one year, you are able to enrol.
#### Contents
The Pre-Master's for Biomedical Engineering is always **tailor-made**, there is no fixed format. The content and the study load of the programme depends on your previous education as well as the [specialisation](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/programmes/biomedical-engineering/specialisation/) you choose to follow. The Pre-Master's will consist of a maximum of 60 EC. This means that the Pre-Master's will take up to a **maximum of one year.** In any case, you will be taught scientific research skills as well as mathematics. That's why the following courses will almost always be part of the programme:
- [Academic Skills](x-ut-courselink:201800343)
- [Calculus A](x-ut-courselink:202001171)
- [Calculus B](x-ut-courselink:202001174)
- [Linear Algebra](x-ut-courselink:202001178)
- [Matlab](x-ut-courselink:202001389)
Moreover, you will follow domain-specific courses, related to the specialisation you will follow.
**Do you want to know what the Pre-Master's would look like for you?** Contact the [study adviser](mailto:studyadviser-bmt@utwente.nl). Make sure to mention your previous education, including an overview of the courses with course descriptions.
#### Start date
The Pre-Master's always starts in **September.** Once you have completed the Pre-Master's programme successfully, you can continue with the Master's in Biomedical Engineering. If you choose the specialisation in Bioengineering Technologies, you can continue with the Master's only in September.
#### During or after your bachelor's
You have the option to follow (part of) the Pre-Master's during your current bachelor by taking courses in your minor space. It's an option worth considering as it saves you time and money: after all, you have already paid tuition fees for your bachelor's. A second option is to first get your bachelor's degree and then transfer to this Master's via the Pre-Master's. Contact the [study adviser](mailto:studyadviser-bmt@utwente.nl) for your options.
Dutch research university
As a bachelor's student at UT or another Dutch research university, you might be admitted into the Master's in Biomedical Engineering under the condition that you complete a Pre-Master's first. This might be the case when your bachelor's is in a (slightly) different field of study than the Master's in Biomedical Engineering.

International education
The Pre-Master's is taught mainly in Dutch, so if you are a non-Dutch speaking international student, you do not have the option of participating in a pre-master's. You can only apply for the Master's directly (if you are admissible).
## What is expected of you?
The Pre-Master's is designed not only to address any deficiencies in your prior knowledge, but it is also an effective way to find out whether studying at a research university is right for you. Therefore, the following rules apply:
- You have to complete the Pre-Master’s successfully within one academic year.
- There is a maximum of two exams per course.
