Learn to manage socio-technical change processes in the environment, energy and water domains.

Making the world more resilient and sustainable is an urgent, yet complex task. Our global community is struggling with climate change, pollution and degradation of ecosystems, and increasing economic and social inequality. What does it take to organise, manage, and lead socio-technical change towards solving these global challenges? How can we keep our economy viable without exceeding the carrying capacity of ecosystems and infrastructures? That’s what the Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management (MEEM) is all about.

This Master’s, offered in Leeuwarden, will help you become a change agent at the interface between social, technological, and ecological systems. With a focus on social science disciplines such as management, public policy, governance, and law, you will learn to tackle challenges in the field of energy, water, and environmental management. This Master’s covers themes like sustainable development, resilience, circular economy, social entrepreneurship, environmental quality, and technological innovation – from the perspective of both developed and developing countries.

Located in leeuwarden, friesland

Whereas the campus of the University of Twente is located in Enschede, in the eastern part of the Netherlands, the Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management is offered in Leeuwarden, in the northern province of Friesland, a province that has a strong focus on circularity. You will attend classes at the WaterCampus, the hub of the Dutch water technology sector and an inspiring environment in the field of sustainable development and environmental management. In case you need assistance in finding accommodation, please contact the MEEM Office.

Combining knowledge and action in a hands-on approach

Are you a dreamer, or a doer? If you identify with the latter, you have come to the right place! As a student, you will work on real-life, tangible challenges, with a hands-on approach. So, more than wanting to ‘make the world a better place’ we’d like you to think: what specific challenges would you like to take on? What specific leads for change can you find, and what kind of knowledge and skills do you need? This combined focus on thinking and doing is at the heart of this Master’s.

Choose a specialisation

Within MEEM, you get to focus on a specific domain of sustainability, by choosing one of the three specialisations. Your choice determines which domain you will focus on during the case study project and master’s thesis in your second semester. Whichever specialisation you choose: you will also develop solid expertise in the areas of the other specialisations as well, as these are highly interconnected.

The specialisation in Energy Management helps you understand opportunities and problems related to the transition towards a more sustainable configuration of societal energy systems, including energy markets, regions, cities, communities, and industries. You will dive deeper into the global energy system, including the underlying governance structures and interdependencies – and use these insights to find implications for change in the energy sector.

1 yearFull-timeEnglish-taught - Environmental Management

The transition towards a green economy is a challenging one, as it requires a fundamental transformation of the way our economy works, including industrial processes, the use of resources, and consumption patterns. Do you want to gain insights into the key concepts and principles that guide management strategies towards environmental and social sustainability? Then the specialisation in Environmental Management is right for you.

1 yearFull-timeEnglish-taught - Water Management

The increasing demand for water, coupled with growing populations, climate change, and environmental degradation, has made water management a critical issue for sustainable development and climate change adaptation. So what does it take to safeguard sustainability and resilience of water resources and water supply? The specialisation in Water Management will help you to come up with responsible strategies for the management of water resources and climate change adaptation.
