Work on groundbreaking innovations in **chemical processes and materials** as a future-oriented chemical scientist.

The chemical industry has played a fundamental role in our society and will continue to do so. However, the industry currently finds itself at a turning point. Society demands a more sustainable economy, including the circular use of raw materials. Moreover, **advances in materials are rapidly unfolding**, paving the way for promising breakthroughs in all kinds of fields, including **medicine, energy, food, transportation, and computer chips (semiconductors)**. These developments require **a new approach to many chemical processes and the use of different materials**. The **Master’s in Chemical Science & Engineering**(CSE) at the University of Twente (UT) will prepare you for this exciting and advancing role of chemical scientists and engineers.

During this Master’s, you will engage in pioneering research in order to develop, improve and implement (novel) chemical processes, products and materials. From capturing and reusing CO2to detecting diseases and from improving batteries or semiconductors to purifying water using membranes, you will harness state-of-the-art technology and techniques to address the challenges that society faces today.

Process Technology programme for professionals

The Master’s in Chemical Science & Engineering is a full-time programme that cannot be pursued on a part-time basis. UT does however offer the part-time [Process Technology (PT) programme](https://www.utwente.nl/nl/tnw/pt-cursus/) (info in Dutch) for professionals active in the Process Technology industry who want to upgrade their career.

Teaching degree

Thinking of becoming a teacher in secondary education? This Master’s offers the option of obtaining a first-level teaching degree in chemistry by adding the Dutch-taught [Master’s in Science Education](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/programmes/science-education/) to your Master’s in CSE.

## Choose a specialisation

You have a lot of freedom to tailor your Master’s in Chemical Science & Engineering to your interests and ambitions. Whether you want to focus more on **designing and optimising chemical processes** as a process engineer, **research new materials and (bio)molecular structures with high-tech features**, or want to become a **materials scientist or engineer with multidisciplinary skills**: we offer three specialisations to develop your own expertise.

These specialisations are closely linked to each other, which allows you not only to specialise but also to acquire knowledge from the other specialisations at the same time. You will not easily find this interdisciplinarity at other universities. When applying for this Master’s, you need to choose one of the following specialisations. Your choice determines a part of the courses you will take and the type of research you will engage in during your master’s thesis.

- [Chemical & Process Engineering

This specialisation helps you become an expert process engineer, able to understand, develop and improve chemical processes to make the chemicals and green energy needed in a sustainable society.

- [Materials

Do you want to combine chemistry with physics and mechanical engineering to become a materials expert? Then this multidisciplinary specialisation is for you.

- [Molecules & Organic Materials

In this specialisation, you research and develop new materials and (bio)molecular structures to enable breakthroughs in areas such as medicine, energy, food and more.

## Career perspectives

**The demand for academically trained chemical scientists and engineers is high** and will continue to grow, as innovations in processes and materials will be needed in many different sectors. That is why **graduates of this Master’s usually find exciting jobs** soon after graduation, most of them within three months!

### Job opportunities for chemical scientists and engineers

With your degree, you will have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of challenging careers. These may involve the development and design of novel chemical processes and new materials or products in one of many sectors: chemicals, metals, electronics, sustainable energy, water purification, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, biomedical technology, engineering or government.

You could start a career as a researcher, process engineer, R&D scientist, process developer, consultant, maintenance engineer or quality coordinator, to name just a few examples. Of course, you can also choose to first expand your specialist knowledge base by pursuing a PhD or EngD programme as offered by UT’s [Twente Graduate School (TGS)](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/tgs/), or anywhere else in the world. You could even go on to start up your own company!
