# Pre-Master's programme

## Robotics

If you have a university of applied sciences (HBO) degree, you may be admitted to the Master’s in Robotics. However, you first need to complete a six-month pre-master's before being admitted to the master’s.

## What is a pre-Master's?

The pre-master's is a transfer and bridging programme which gives you the knowledge and skills you need to embark on your master's succesfully. Once you’ve completed the pre-master's, you’ll be granted admission to the Master’s in Robotics.

## Start Date

The pre-master’s is only available in the autumn semester, starting at the first of September. After finishing the pre-master's you can start on the master's as of the first of September or the first of February.

## Programme

A pre-master's for HBO students contains 30 credits. This is a full-time study programme of one semester and contains the following courses: mathematics (30 ECs), academic skills (4 ECs) and domain-related courses (11 ECs).

You can expect to spend forty hours per week on the programme, which is divided into lectures (25%), tutorials (25%) and self-study (50%).\

As an HBO student you start the pre-master's [after](http://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/admission-requirements/hbo-applied-sciences/completed-hbo/) completing your bachelor's. You may also take the pre-master's [during](http://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/admission-requirements/hbo-applied-sciences/hbo-transfer-saxion/) your bachelor's as a transfer minor ([Kiesopmaat](https://kiesopmaat.nl/))

## Language

The pre-master's as well as the master's is taught entirely in English.

## Rules of the pre-Master's

The pre-master’s is designed not only to address any deficiencies in your prior knowledge, but it is also an efficient way to find out whether studying at a research university in the field of Robotics is right for you. To this end, a couple of rules apply:

- We ask you to fulfil the requirements of the pre-master’s within one year. Since 30 credits are equivalent to half a year of full-time study, this should not pose a problem.
- You must also earn sufficient marks with a maximum of one re-sit per course. This means you need to take the pre-master's seriously.

You cannot expect to be successful in the pre-master's if you approach it half-heartedly: it is meant as a half-year, full-time programme of study.

**Pre-master Application route**

The application process for the pre-master's depends on your personal situation (application during or after your bachelor's) and your previous education (e.g. university of applied sciences or university background).

Keep an eye on [the application deadlines](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/admission-requirements/deadlines/) and check them prior to your application (pre-master and master deadlines are most of the time identical). However, the deadline for University of Applied Sciences (HBO) students depends on the route you chose. For a pre-master's during an HBO bachelor's – the so-called [transfer minor](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/how-to-apply/during-hbo-application/) – the deadline is earlier than the deadline for a pre-master's [after the HBO programme](https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master/how-to-apply/completed-hbo/).
