# Master's in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation recognised as an initial Master'sstronger European position and broader accessibility

ITC’s [Master’s in Geo‑information Science and Earth Observation](https://www.itc.nl/education/study-finder/geo-information-science-earth-observation/) (MGEO) has now been formally recognised as an initial master’s programme. This recognition confirms that MGEO fully meets European higher‑education standards, strengthens its academic position, and opens the programme to the wider European market.

## Broader Access for Dutch and European Students

**From the 2027 academic year onward**, Dutch and other European students can enrol and pay the government‑set tuition rate for eligible students, making the programme significantly more accessible.

## A Distinctive Academic Focus on the Discipline Itself

A key distinguishing feature of MGEO is its focus on advancing the knowledge domain of earth observation and geo‑information as a discipline in itself. While many programmes use geo‑information and earth observation primarily to support specific application fields, MGEO places the scientific and technological developments of the discipline relevant to those fields at the centre. This makes the programme particularly appealing for students who want to help shape the future of the discipline and shape our world.

## Strengthening European Visibility and Societal Impact

This milestone enhances the visibility and mobility of our students and graduates across Europe and supports ITC’s mission to offer high‑quality, internationally relevant education in geo‑information science and earth observation. ITC remains committed to contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in areas such as energy transition, health, climate adaptation, urban development and smart cities, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable land management.
