Student Movements for Multiculturalism

In 2001, UC Berkeley alumnus and student leader in the American Cultures movement David Yamane published 'Student Movements for Multiculturalism: Challenging the Curricular Color Line in Higher Education' (Johns Hopkins, 2001).  This book recounts the establishment of the American Cultures requirement on the UC Berkeley campus as an effort by students and others to address racism and racial inequality―to challenge the color line―in higher education.  To read this publication, please visit the preview in Google Books or visit the publication page.

Black Studies and the Democratization of American Higher Education

The future of Black Studies is examined in a case study of the development of an American Cultures requirement at the University of California at Berkeley. The requirement is unique in its comparative aspects that include the conceptualization of Whites as one of several identity groups. That is, being White is decentered at the same time as it is acknowledged. The requirement has led to creative applications of the criteria across a range of disciplines. The result has been an example of democratic pluralism that generates generalizations without resorting to absolute truths or universals. Read Online (requires CalNet ID)
