What is the Google Storage Reduction Project?
The end of unlimited cloud storage is here. Along with many other services, Google canceled all unlimited storage offerings and began charging UC Berkeley for our stored content November 1, 2024. The Google Storage Reduction Project ensured that campus reduced our Google storage to an amount affordable under the new Google cost structure.
Current Project Snapshot - Retirement
The Google Storage Reduction Project was officially completed November 1, 2024. A huge heartfelt thank you to all of the many individuals and teams who supported the project with your hard work and attention.
Our project goal was to reduce our Google Storage from 12.4 PB to 1.9 PB. While we are still storing more than 1.9 PB, our storage has been reduced enough to afford our current storage through the end of the 2025 fiscal year. We will complete the entire reduction process by then.
Future Activities

The first half of 2025 will be devoted to:

Reducing storage belonging to people who have left the university: they graduated, they retired, they moved on for other reasons.
- Working with campus to ensure any content owned by these people, that campus continues to need (e.g. collaborative content), is not deleted during the reduction process.
- How to ensure you retain access to collaborative content.- Adjusting the campus Google service processes and technical backend to ensure campus remains within the new Google storage limits.
