Born at UC Berkeley: a breakthrough in the treatment of sickle cell disease
Discover how CRISPR, a technology co-created by a UC Berkeley professor, is being used to transform medicine.
A sickle is a crescent-shaped blade once used to harvest wheat. When red blood cells take on that same curved shape, it signals sickle cell disease –– an inherited condition that causes cells to become stiff and sticky, blocking blood flow and triggering episodes of severe, stabbing pain known as vaso-occlusive crises.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, University of California researcher Matteo M. Garbelotto-Benzon will go for a walk in the crisp cold of Canazei, a town near where he was raised in Italy’s Dolomites mountain range. His feet may crunch fresh snow in view of the Alpine peaks that inspired his career in forestry. The difference this time? In one hand, he’ll hold the Olympic torch — and in the other the lead of S’Abba, the service dog who helped him walk, and ski, again.

Cal Accepts Invitation To Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl
Bears To Take On Hawai’i On Christmas Eve
The California football team has accepted an invitation to play in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl and will face Hawai'i on December 24 at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN.
It marks the third straight bowl appearance for the Golden Bears (7-5), which is the program's longest bowl streak since it went to seven straight bowl games from 2003-09. Overall, it's the 27th bowl appearance in school history.
