## Keep your guard up against scams

It is crucial to remain vigilant while navigating the job market, as scammers often exploit job seekers. If it seems too good to be true, it often is.

Hi, my name is Connie, and I work at the Deakin legal service on campus. When you are looking for work, you might find advertisements that are actually job scams.
\
\
A scam is a criminal trick, pretending to be a real job. Scammers can steal your identity or convince you to move stolen money or property.
\
\
So, how can you tell the difference between a real job and a job scam? A job scam wants to trick you, so many scams will try to look like a real job. Scammers will ask you to sign contracts, use websites pretending to be real companies, and some will even call you on the phone. Most real jobs will want to interview you in person. If you meet your employer at their office for an interview this is probably a real job. Scammers don't want to be identified to the police, so they usually won't meet you in person.
\
\
If a job wants you to transfer money using your personal bank account or using services like Western Union, this is probably a scam. An employer should only use your personal bank account to pay you wages, and nothing else.
\
\
If a job seems too good to be true, it probably is. Jobs that claim you can work from home and make thousands of dollars doing only a couple of hours work, are probably scams. Remember if you're not sure or something doesn't feel right, you can speak to us for advice.
