Professor Dr. Cyrill Stachniss heads the Laboratory for Photogrammetry and Robotics at the University of Bonn. He is a member of the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Until 2025, he was a visiting professor of engineering at the University of Oxford. Stachniss is the spokesperson for the Cluster of Excellence "PhenoRob – Robotics and Phenotyping for Sustainable Plant Production." It was through this spokesperson role that he became involved with "We Are Uni Bonn."

Agriculture of the Future

PhenoRob is the only robotics Cluster of Excellence in the current Excellence Initiative competition and is now in its second phase. Prof. Dr. Cyrill Stachniss co-leads the cluster with Prof. Dr. Heiner Kuhlmann. They are dedicated to the sustainable, technology-driven transformation of crop production through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Their vision is to transform crop production for the agriculture of the future by optimizing breeding and crop management with innovative technological solutions. As cluster spokesperson, Stachniss collaborates across disciplines with scientists from robotics, geodesy, computer science, plant phenotyping, soil science, crop production, ecology, and agricultural economics. Cluster Spokespersons shape the Cluster

The spokespersons play a crucial role in determining the direction of the cluster's research program and who ultimately contributes scientific expertise. Excellent researchers already bring outstanding experience and achievements to the cluster. The spokespersons then ensure that these diverse strengths can be effectively leveraged within the cluster structure to achieve the cluster's goals. Stachniss highly values the transdisciplinary research structure at the University of Bonn.
