Stefan Hartmann from the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) is the German Mathematical Society's (DMV) "Math Maker" for July and August 2025. Hartmann is a mathematician himself and has been involved in gifted education for over 25 years, both as a research associate and through public outreach. This includes numerous school projects, among them the "Bonn Math Club." The DMV award brings Stefan Hartmann to "We are Uni Bonn."

Identifying and nurturing young talents

At the Bonn Math Club, elementary school students meet with university students and lecturers to "do math" together. This sparks fascination, is fun, and offers the opportunity to specifically support young math talents. The focus is on topics not typically covered in regular math classes. Initially playful, then systematic, mathematical challenges are tackled and addressed using newly acquired mathematical techniques. The emphasis is always on the enjoyment of mathematics. Stefan Hartmann leads the Math Club and oversees the development of its various programs.

"We" wins

When asked about his involvement, Hartmann quickly refers to his fellow members of the math promotion team. He always speaks of "we." In an interview with the DMV (German Mathematical Society), Hartmann explains: "We are invited to schools and give lessons on topics outside of the school curriculum. We also organize a large math tournament in Bonn and a student math week." His "absolute passion project" is the Bonn Math Club with all its various projects, which, in addition to the HCM (Hermann Center for Mathematics), includes student teachers, teachers, scientists, and even more experienced students who can already teach younger children themselves. At the Bonn Math Club, founded by math enthusiast Stefan Hartmann, he says his "absolute passion project" is the Bonn Math Club.
