Deregistration

You can be deregistered in two ways, either at your own request (this also includes if you withdraw your enrollment) or automatically by the University. Either way, deregistration has the same effect: You will leave the University and lose your status as a student.

Deregistration on request

If you would like to leave the University, you should submit a deregistration request via the BASIS-Portal.

Looking to move to a different university?

You will usually be OK to request deregistration with effect from the end of the current semester and will normally be enrolled at your new university with effect from the next semester. This has the benefit of retaining your student status throughout your switch.

Completed your studies and want to leave the University of Bonn?

If you would like to have the fact that you have completed your studies recorded as the reason for your deregistration, then we recommend actively requesting it, else you will be automatically deregistered by the University.

Recently enrolled at the University of Bonn but changed your mind?

If so, pick “Withdrawal of enrollment before the start of lectures” as your reason.

Deadlines and entry into effect

Getting fees and credit balances reimbursed

You can get a full refund of your semester fee if you request deregistration in the BASIS-Portal before lectures start.

After lectures start, the General Students’ Committee (AStA) will decide on a refund for your student transit pass. The remaining portion of the semester fee cannot be refunded by either the Student Registry or the AStA1.

Credit balances left over from previous semesters will always be refunded.

N.B.: Refunds can only be paid into bank accounts with a SEPA IBAN.

If you would like to request deregistration, log into the BASIS-Portal using your Uni-ID and do so online.

FAQ

I failed my final attempt at an examination - what now?

If you failed your final attempt at coursework or an examination required in order to continue your studies, thus barring you from doing so, we recommend getting in touch with the Central Study Advisory and Counseling Service.

How do I obtain my certificate of deregistation?

If you have requested deregistration, you will be able to download the corresponding certificate from the BASIS-Portal.

If you were deregistered automatically, you will only have received a deregistration decision, which is not enough to get you enrolled at a different university. You can request your certificate of deregistration from us by email.

Can I request deregistration even though I don’t have a degree certificate yet?

Not yet taken all your examinations?

In this case, you must remain enrolled and should hold off requesting deregistration.

Taken all your examinations but not yet had them assessed?

You do not need to be enrolled simply to have your performance in examinations assessed, meaning that you can already request deregistration. If you are in any doubt (e.g. if you are not sure whether you have passed all your examinations), contact the relevant examination authority first.

Already passed your examinations but not yet been issued with your degree certificate?

You can request deregistration in this case, because you do not need to be enrolled in order for your degree certificate to be issued.
