Scholarships, Bursaries & Awards
The deadline to apply for scholarships, bursaries and awards is May 1, unless otherwise stated.
We encourage allstudents who have received an offer or are on the waitlist to apply for scholarships and bursaries.
- Visit the My Financials page of your Student Centreto start your application.
- Fill out one application form for all the scholarships, awards and bursaries listed on the Registrar's site. If there is no application information listed, the award is granted automatically by the Academic Status Committee based on the stated criteria.
Applicants to the JD program are automatically considered for some of our entrance awards, some of our most prestigious awards require you to apply for scholarships, awards and bursaries to be eligible.
Differential Tuition Bursaries (DTB) have a separate assessment process. The Student Awards and Financial Aid (SAFA) Office usually notifies successful DTB candidates by email in late August.

Entrance scholarship for incoming first-year JD students
UCalgary Law Entrance Awards of Excellence
The following awards are offered annually to students entering the JD program in the Faculty of Law. There is no financial need component, and all applicants are automatically considered for these awards unless otherwise stated in the award description. Students will be notified no later than March 31 of the year an offer of admission is made to prospective recipients.
Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP Entrance Scholarship
- Valued at up to $60,000 ($20,000 in each year of the JD program)
- Based on academic merit and community leadership
- Renewable in second and third years based on a minimum GPA of 3.2 and minimum of 24 units in the previous fall and winter terms
Harold W. Lemieux Memorial Law Scholarship
- Valued at up to $24,000 ($8,000 in each year of the JD Program)
- Based on academic merit
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred, but other Bachelor degrees in Science will be considered.
- Preference given to a student with at least three (3) years work experience (between undergraduate degree and Law school)
Murray and Anne Fraser Entrance Award
- Valued at up to $12,000
- Based on academic merit, financial need, and demonstrated involvement in curricular activities and/or community service
- Offered annually to students entering the JD program
- Online application through your Student Centre is required
F. Murray Fraser QC Scholarship
- Valued at up to $12,000
- Based on academic merit and demonstrated involvement in student leadership activities
- Preference given to a student who attended University of King’s College in the Foundation Year Program, graduating from University of King’s College or Dalhousie University
- Offered annually to a student entering the JD program
Faculty of Law Undergraduate Awards of Excellence
- Valued at $10,000 each
- Based on academic merit
- Offered to three (3) students entering their first year of the JD program
Faculty of Law Undergraduate Award of Excellence for Indigenous and Black Students
- Valued at $10,000 each
- Based on academic merit
- Offered to one (1) Indigenous or Black Person entering their first year of the JD program
- Online application through your Student Centre is required
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP Award for BIPOC law students
- Valued at $10,000
- Based on academic merit
- For a student who is Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour
- Offered annually to an undergraduate student entering the JD program
- Online application through your Student Centre is required
Financial Aid
Student loans are available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are studying full- or part-time in a degree-granting program.
Alberta students
Alberta residents who need financial aid may get student loans by applying online through Student Aid Alberta. Submit one loan application to be eligible to receive any combination of federal or provincial loans and grants.

Out-of-Province Students
Students residing in a province other than Alberta are eligible for government student loan funding. You can apply through your province or territory of residence. Submit one loan application to be eligible to receive any combination of Federal or provincial loans and grants.

UCalgary Law Student Emergency Fund
The University of Calgary Faculty of Law Student Emergency Fund is provided to assist Undergraduate and Graduate Students in meeting an emergency/temporary needby bridging a financial gap that would otherwise impede thestudents’ ability to complete their studies.
