Areas of Research

Empire and Non-State Violence in North America\ I work broadly in the history of empires and non-state violence in North America and the Atlantic world, with an emphasis on the U.S. Civil War era through the early 20th century. My current projects explore the role of non-state actors in diplomacy and irregular warfare on the margins of North America and the Caribbean during the Civil War, as well as the role of British subjects in that conflict and in the broader battle over slavery in the 19th Century.
