The faculty provides a number of different funding opportunities for those with primary membership in Cumming School of Medicine.  Some opportunities are listed below but you are encouraged to also speak with your research institutes for more opportunities.

Internal Funding Opportunities

Research Enhancement Program

This initiative, led by the Grant Development Office, is designed to enhance the competitive edge of Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) faculty in their pursuit of future grant applications. The expanded program now includes three distinct funding streams, enabling faculty to access support at various stages of their research projects and grant application development.

Stream 1: New Techniques/Methodologies

This stream provides up to $4,000 per calendar year per faculty member or lab/team member to obtain training in new technologies and methodologies, strengthening their research programs.

This funding aims to equip faculty with state-of-the-art skills and knowledge to enhance their competitive edge when applying for grants.

Proposals will be considered for activities that help researchers develop advanced skills or techniques to strengthen future grant applications or quickly address specific experimental requests from reviewers for manuscripts close to publication in high-impact journals (as defined by your research area).

Stream 2: Grant Editing, Grant Writer, Illustrator, Project Management

This stream focuses on supporting grants with unique or complex requirements, often associated with short turnaround times or substantial administrative burdens.

Funding details:

Stream 3: External Honoraria for Scientific Review

This stream provides up to $500 per external reviewer and a maximum of $1,000 per faculty member per calendar year to support external scientific reviews of grant applications.

Reviews must be conducted by peers external to the University of Calgary. Applications should first, ideally, undergo internal peer review but we will consider supporting external reviewer input at earlier stages of grant development if there is a clear explanation of how this would benefit the proposal.

VPR Transdisciplinary Connector Grants

The new Transdisciplinary Scholarship Connector Grants program is designed to promote initiatives that enable UCalgary teams to explore questions, challenges and opportunities that demand a transdisciplinary approach.

The proposed activities need to clearly show how they will result in lasting new connections as well as how they will benefit the area of scholarship being addressed.
