Why hire graduate student interns on-campus?

TTI On-Campus Graduate Internship provides a unique opportunity for current graduate students to strengthen and expand their professional and transferable skills by working alongside experienced UCalgary faculty, staff and partners. Through a combination of mentoring and participation in meaningful projects and tasks, interns will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the university while expanding their professional network and career exploration.

Internship (position) eligibility

To qualify for a TTI On-Campus opportunity, an internship must:

Compensation and budget

Graduate students will be hired into an hourly AUPE Student Employee classification using the Template Based Hire process at a SPA 1 or Tech 1 band at a $26/hour salary. The hiring department is responsible for completing the Template Based Hire for the duration of the internship. FGS will provide a journal transfer to the hiring department to cover half of the student’s wages, so each department is essentially paying $13/hour.

UCalgary hiring department will provide

  1. Supervison and mentorship

An identified UCalgary employee will assign and supervise the intern’s work, inviting them to relevant meetings to maximize exposure to the university structure. Mentorship and supervision will consist of both formal and informal conversations about skill development, professional workplaces, university systems and structures, and career development. 2. Project component with skills development coaching

Interns will work on a meaningful project or task identified by the host partner. Mentors will guide and supervise the intern’s work, explaining procedures and process, introducing them to relevant team members within and outside of their unit, and providing feedback on the project or task as it evolves.
