Graduate with a certificate. Complete all three levels and earn a certificate of recognition.

Program Structure

Tier 1: Foundations

Theme: Foundational Leadership. Learn self-awareness, leadership styles, time management, and effective communication and teamwork.

For undergrad students in any year who are new to the program and first-year students taking ENGG 200 leadership seminars. *

Note: To pass Tier 1 of the certificate, you need to pass ENGG 200 or complete the Tier 1 self-directed modules. Questions? email us atschulich.leadership@ucalgary.ca.

Tier 2: Development

Theme: Team Leadership. Learn about strategic networking, difficult conversations, leading a collaborative team, and conflict resolution.

Note: This tier is for students who have completed Tier 1:  Foundations.

Tier 3: Excellence

Theme: Transformational Leadership. Learn about leading a team with empathy, negotiation, personal brand, presentation skills, and inclusive leadership.

Note: This tier is for students who have completed Tier 1: Foundations and Tier 2: Development.

I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of the program and the wide variety of session topics and guest speakers we get. It feels like a privilege to be able to have a program such as this, and I'm excited for next year!

Certificate Core Components

6 workshops per year (1.5 hrs each) + 2 self-reflections.

Options to Stay on Track

Each workshop is offered twice in the evenings, with bonus workshops and make-up assignments available if you miss a session.

If you are new to the Certificate in Engineering Leadership and not currently enrolled in ENGG 200 or did not pass ENGG 200 in a previous year, you can register through the UCalgary Continuing Education site.

We’re honoured to welcome Nannette Ho‑Covernton, BSc(Eng)’87, as the Keynote Speaker for our 2026 Engineering Leadership Conference.

A champion for service‑driven leadership, innovation and inclusion, Nannette is the 2025 Arch Award for Alumni Service recipient whose impact spans mentorship, volunteerism and transformational leadership in the energy sector and beyond.

Today, Nannette serves as Executive Director of the ETC Foundation, where she leads transformative initiatives that accelerate innovation and sustainability across sectors. Her work is rooted in collaboration, systems thinking, and a deep commitment to driving meaningful change.

Her career is a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t measured by title — but by the people, communities and futures we help build. We can’t wait to learn from her insights and lived experience.
