Residency training leads to certification by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). The University of Calgary has over 65 accredited residency programs to choose from which include specialty and subspecialty training programs.
Subspecialty residency programs build upon the knowledge gained through completion of a primary specialty residency program, requiring additional education, experience and certification to practice independently in that subspecialty. After completing their primary specialty training, residents then apply for and complete a subspecialty training program.
There are two sources of funding for residency training programs at the University of Calgary: Alberta Ministry of Health grants and approved external sponsoring agencies. There are no self-funded residency positions at the University of Calgary.
Successful applicants are required to be registered with the University of Calgary Postgraduate Medical Education Office, the Medical Education office within Alberta Health Services, The College of Physician and Surgeons of Alberta and the Canadian Medical Protective Association. - Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS)
- Participating programs include all primary specialty training programs, and most subspecialty training programs. For more information on applying through CaRMS, please click here.
- Direct Entry
- Several of our accredited subspecialty training programs do not participate in in the CaRMS match and are considered direct entry programs. Qualified candidates must apply directly to the program of interest. Available direct entry programs at the University of Calgary include the Clinician Investigator Program, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neuroradiology and category 2 Family Medicine Enhanced Skills programs. Physicians holding an independent practice registration with CPSA looking to change their scope of practice to a different specialty at the University of Calgary.

Residents who are funded by external sponsoring agencies interested in starting a residency training program at the University of Calgary.
