QU’s Center for Law & Development marks 100th publication since its launch

The Center for Law & Development (CLD) of the College of Law of Qatar University (QU) celebrates a new milestone as it marks its 100th publication since its launch in January 2017. These publications are in the form of high impact SCOPUS journal articles, non-SCOPUS journal articles, book chapters, and books. Some of the publications are highly cited as recognized by Web of Science, and some have been influential in the development of laws and policy internationally.

The publications of the Center revolve around topics beneficial to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy, including economic development; environmental protection; human development; social development and Qatari law and policy. The CLD has a series of publications on cutting-edge research subjects related to law and emerging technologies, including on artificial intelligence, financial technology, block chain, cybersecurity and decentralized autonomous organizations. The highest cited article received over 230 citations since 2018 and was presented at the UN General Assembly named ‘Decarbonizing bitcoin: Law and policy choices for reducing the energy consumption of block chain technologies and digital currencies’ by Jon Truby. Other articles have been discussed at several UN panels including one on financial technology in Singapore.

The CLD runs an active research roundtable series to attract scholarship on under researched subjects of benefit to Qatar and demanded by Qatar’s National Research Strategy and Qatar University Research Roadmap.

Some of the publications are conducted in the context of research projects funded by Qatar National Research Fund, the European Union and Qatar University internal grants. The CLD is involved in numerous high profile research grants and also brought the first European Commission funded Jean Monnet module grant to the Middle East. It is also planning a publication of an edited book on this subject.

CLD’s legal objectives are aligned with the Qatar National Development Strategy, the Qatar National Research Strategy, the Qatar University Research Roadmap and the College of Law Research Plan. Its primary objective is to produce interdisciplinary legal research output relevant to the needs of Qatar.

Dr. Muna Al-Marzooqi, Dean of the College of Law in QU commented saying, “This achievement is the result of a driven research strategy towards publication outcomes and highly active affiliated CLD professors in the context of fostering a culture of research within the College of Law. This has helped the College increase its research rankings and we seek to hire more research professors in CLD to increase the scientific output of the center.”

Dr. Jon Truby the Director of the CLD praised the efforts of the research team saying, “Our highly active research team is working around the clock to publish meaningful output in leading indexed journals and especially SCOPUS journals, in line with our research objectives. We are proud that our innovative publications have helped QU to increase its research ranking. We have many more publications underway especially several books that will be released soon.”

Dr. Imad Ibrahim, the Assistant Research Professor at the center expressed his enthusiasm with regards to the center’s future given the increasing number of publications and research projects granted over the last few years. The CLD encourages academics to join as affiliates and members to enhance the exchange of ideas between researchers in Qatar and abroad.
