QU’s Gulf Studies Center Gears Up for the Eighth Annual Multidisciplinary International Conference

In collaboration with the Doha International Family Institute, Qatar University (QU)'s Gulf Studies Center, situated in the College of Arts and Sciences, is set to host the international conference titled “Gulf Families: Continuity and Change.” Scheduled on 19-20 November 2023, the conference aims to delve into the intricate dynamics of Gulf families, exploring their continuity and changes within the context of the evolving Gulf society.

The Gulf Studies Center at QU, in collaboration with the Doha International Family Institute, is set to host an international conference titled “Gulf Families: Continuity and Change” from 19 to 20 November, 2023. This conference aims to delve into the multifaceted perspectives on the factors, trends, and scale of change in Gulf families.

The conference will cover eight pivotal themes, addressing crucial topics such as the impact of social media, the dynamics of gender, youth, health, issues of divorce and marriage, arts and sports, the nexus between migration and family, and family policies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Furthermore, the conference aims to serve as a platform for distinguished scholars and experts in Gulf Studies to exchange views, insights, and analyses on these complex issues.

Importantly, this conference is framed within the Gulf Studies Center's commitment to understanding the transformative shifts in the Gulf region's family structure and function. Currently, the Gulf region is undergoing profound changes that, though occurring quietly, manifest their impact on the structure and function of families in various ways. To comprehend the nature of Gulf societies, a deep understanding of Gulf families and their intricate and sensitive relationships within and beyond major social institutions is essential.

The discussion on the continuity and change in Gulf family entities is particularly intriguing within Gulf Family Studies, as it seeks to explore the evolution of these families over time, examining what has changed and what has remained constant.

In addition to its academic significance, the conference serves as a valuable platform to underscore the need for further research to facilitate a profound understanding of the continuity and changes in Gulf families within a cultural context.

Notably, the Gulf Studies Center's interest in family institutions in the Gulf region stems from the ongoing transformations that, while discreet, have a significant impact on the fabric and function of families in myriad ways.
