The Peer Tutoring program provides collaborative support for undergraduate students desiring assistance with lower-division course content or general study skills. Peer tutors work directly with students in small groups and one-on-one settings under the supervision of a Specialist.

There is no need to make appointments. Access to tutors will be on a first-come first-served basis. To view the tutoring schedule please click here. All our peer tutors are committed to promoting independent, active learning among the students they assist.

Who are peer tutors?

Our peer tutors are a select group of students chosen for their ability to assist students both academically and interpersonally. Peer tutors must have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0 and a grade of B+ or higher in each course being tutored. In addition, each tutor must be recommended by a professor.

All tutors are required to attend training sessions conducted by the SLSC staff.

Peer Tutor Training and Certification

The peer tutor-training program is ongoing and mandatory for all tutors.  Newly hired tutors must attend a one-hour training, “Introduction to Tutoring,” before they start their work. After that, they have to go through 10 hours of intensive training and complete 50 hours of actual tutoring in order to be certified by the National Tutoring Association (NTA) . Additional tutor training sessions will be offered throughout the academic year.

Tutors are obligated to abide by the NTA Code of Conduct.

Tips for students (tutees) to benefit from peer tutoring

• Tutoring sessions are not a substitute for classes.  Instead, students will review and improve their understanding of course material, as well as develop better study skills and strategies during tutoring sessions.
• Tutoring services are drop-in. Students do not need to make tutoring appointments, and access to tutors will be first-come first-served.
• Tutoring sessions range from 15-60 minutes.  After a 60-minute tutoring session, waiting students have priority.
• Tutees are responsible for completing their own assignments.  Tutors will not be blamed for students’ failures.
• Tutees are expected to come to tutoring sessions prepared. They should attend classes, take notes, attempt homework, and prepare specific questions for each session.

Tutors’ Awards

Each semester, the Section of Academic Support nominates a tutor for outstanding service and dedication to the position. The selection criteria may include but not limited to: deep understanding of the job responsibilities, motivation, enthusiasm, understanding the academic needs of students, student feedback and evaluation, punctuality, and accepting additional responsibilities.
