Dr Muna Al Marzouqi wins QU Fellowship Award for the 2017/2018 Cycle

LAWC Assistant Professor of Law Dr Muna Al-Marzouqi won the Qatar University (QU) Fellowship Award for the 2017-2018 Cycle.

The one-year award is presented by the Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) at Georgetown University’s (GU-Q) School of Foreign Service (SFS) in Qatar.

By receiving the QU Fellowship Award, Dr Al-Marzouqi obtained membership in the Georgetown intellectual community. She was granted the amount of $5,000 to pursue her research project, as well as an office space and access to GU-Q library resources. During her tenure of the fellowship, Dr Al-Marzouqi will meet SFS professors and students in an open forum of discussion related to her discipline and research interests.

Themed “The right of access to ports: a legal analysis of suspending maritime transport by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt against the State of Qatar”, Dr Al-Marzouqi’s research provides a legal analysis of the measures that have been undertaken by the blockade countries to suspend Qatar’s maritime navigation during the Gulf crisis. It also compares between the current Gulf crisis and similar occasions to highlight the impact of such maritime suspensions on the international trade and maritime navigation.

Commenting on her achievement, Dr Al-Marzouqi said: “The main objective of the paper is to reveal the legal aspect of the measures taken by the blockade countries against the State of Qatar and to provide a reference for entities in Qatar in charge of filing a complaint before the International Maritime Organization.”

The fellowship awards are made to QU faculty members who propose to use the time granted to pursue high-quality research projects with promising prospects for publication in leading journals or university publications.
