QU Organizes Workshop on Vehicle Restraint Systems
A training workshop on Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRSs) hosted by the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center (QTTSC) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) aimed to provide information on the necessary assessment and benchmarking on auditing vehicle restraint systems. This workshop is one of the initiatives under the second National Traffic Safety Action Plan 2018-2022.
Engineering faculty and staff members alongside representatives from consultancies, contractors, and Ministries (MOTC, MOI) attended the workshop, which was delivered by Mr. Bernd Wolfgang Wink, an expert who was a member of the EU committee for standardization of Road Safety Systems in Brussels until 2009.
Commenting on the workshop, QTTSC Director Prof Dr. Faris Tarlochan said, “Road safety is a major concern globally especially with the alarming rate of increase in fatalities amongst young drivers. Therefore, this workshop aims to ensure the continuous efforts for providing safe roads for all by raising public awareness and responsibility towards common cooperation for enhancing road safety systems from an academic perspective.”
QTTSC workshop coordinator Research Associate Dr. Shahram Tahmasseby said that vehicle restraint systems are effective and essential measures to help road authorities reducing crash severities and consequent fatalities on along expressways. This workshop will be followed by an audit of sample roads in Qatar to provide a pilot assessment of VRSs in Qatar.
