From July 1, 2019, smoking has been prohibited on the campus of the University of Tsukuba.

The "Law for Partial Revision of the Health Promotion Law" (hereinafter referred to as the "Revised Law"), which aims to prevent unwanted passive smoking, was promulgated and went into effect on July 1, 2019, and smoking has been prohibited on campus from that date.

In response, the university has removed all existing smoking areas by the end of June, 2019.

Under the revised law, universities are classified as Class I facilities and are allowed to set up specified outdoor smoking areas (places where necessary measures are taken to prevent passive smoking outdoors) on campus.

However, in principle, smoking is prohibited on campus, since the university is a facility mainly used by people who are at high risk of harming their health due to passive smoking.

In addition, smoking on the street and littering of cigarette butts in the vicinity of the university are strictly prohibited as they may cause inconvenience to nearby residents.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
