### Program Introduction

The Biology Program at Nagoya University’s Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences offers advanced education in the biological foundations of agriculture and biotechnology. The program covers diverse fields such as plant genetics, plant physiology, animal reproduction, applied microbiology, enzymology, and biochemistry. Research emphasizes the development of innovative biotechnological approaches for improving crops, livestock, and environmental sustainability. Students explore topics including bioactive molecules, soil biology, forest ecology, biomass utilization, and plant genomics. \
\
Through interdisciplinary coursework and hands-on research, the program prepares students for careers in biotechnology, agriculture, and life science industries, as well as academic and public research institutions. Examples of companies that have employed our graduates include Accenture Japan Ltd(Services), Qingdao KingAgroot Resistant Weed Control Co., Ltd(Agriculture), MIMS Medica Sdn Bhd(Chemical).\

## How to Apply

[Apply Here](https://admissions.g30.nagoya-u.ac.jp/admissions/graduateprograms/)

The Biological Science Program at the Bioagricultural Sciences conducts its first round of admissions in January. A second, rolling admission period may be offered in May, depending on the availability of seats remaining after the first round. The availability of the rolling admission will be announced in mid-April on the G30 Graduate School Admissions page.\
\
Applicants are advised to contact their prospective research supervisor in advance to confirm whether the research group can accommodate an additional graduate student. If you do not receive a timely reply, we recommend contacting another research group.\

#### What sparked your interest to pursue research in your chosen program?

During high school, I wanted to study in an English-based environment where I could gain hands-on research experience from early on. While searching for universities, I found that the G30 Bioagri program at Nagoya University offers intensive experimental courses starting in the second year and provides opportunities for undergraduates to join research labs. I was strongly drawn to this environment, which led me to apply for the program. Later, I decided to continue to the master’s course to further deepen and expand my undergraduate research.

This photo was taken in front of my poster when I attended a conference in Okazaki.

#### What kind of research you do currently?

Although my major is in Applied Biosciences, my research focuses more on fundamental science. I study photosynthesis in a type of photosynthetic bacteria called cyanobacteria.
Specifically, I investigate three key components involved in photosynthesis — the green pigment chlorophyll, photosynthetic proteins, and the thylakoid membranes that house them.
While these components are well known, the detailed relationships among them remain unclear. My research aims to reveal the detailed mechanisms by which reduced chlorophyll levels affect photosynthetic proteins, thylakoid membranes, and the organism as a whole.

#### What has been the most memorable research experience in your studies so far?

One of the most memorable experiences for me was presenting my work at conferences. Before joining the lab, I was a bit worried about leading my own research, but with the guidance of my lab seniors and professors, I gradually became confident working independently. Through hard work on experiments, presenting my work in conferences allowed me to exchange ideas and receive feedback, which made me realize that research really levels up when you share it with others!
I also feel really proud when people in the lab say things like, “Kim-san is the best at that experiment,” because it shows how much I’ve grown through practice and dedication.

#### What message would you like to share with someone considering pursuing research at Nagoya University?

Nagoya University is a great place to grow as a researcher. The professors are very passionate and always willing to help, and students are encouraged to think independently and take initiative in their own research.
If you love doing experiments and discovering new things, you’ll definitely enjoy your time here. You might even get the chance to present your research at a conference and meet researchers from all over the world! It’s a valuable opportunity that can inspire you and broaden your perspective on research.
