About Nagoya University
Nagoya University (NU) was first founded in 1871 as a temporary hospital and medical school. After undergoing several transitions, NU was established as an imperial university in 1939, and it has grown to be one of the world’s top research universities.
Throughout its history, NU has maintained a free and vibrant academic culture. Conducting research and education on all aspects of human beings, society, and nature, the University pursues its goal of contributing to the well-being and happiness of humankind. Nagoya University’s fundamental objective is to cultivate leaders with genuine courage and intellect. We call such leaders “勇気ある知識人 (Yuuki Aru Chishiki Jin),” that is individuals who harness their courage, curiosity, and creativity to fully, yet responsibly, exploit their freedom with their educational and research endeavors.
Our multi-disciplinary curriculum is designed to cultivate global leaders who are able to develop innovative solutions, through inquiry and analysis, with strong communication and teamwork skills to be productive members of the global environment. Nagoya University welcomes highly motivated students who share this vision to apply to our programs.
Message from The President
Nagoya University is one of the top ranked universities in Japan. Here, students and scholars work together, engage in top-notch research to pursue scientific discoveries and invent new state-of-the-art technology. Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded to scholars associated with Nagoya University. Dr. Hiroshi Amano, Professor of Engineering, remains an active faculty member, teaching, directing, and overseeing research activities in his laboratory. He was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the energy-efficient blue light-emitting diode (LED) together with Professor Isamu Akasaki and Professor Shuji Nakamura at UC Santa Barbara. This invention changed our world and our daily lives. Students at Nagoya University study together with top scholars in their fields, such as Dr. Amano.

The Art of Inspiring Innovation
A high percentage of NU undergraduates choose to continue with postgraduate studies: about 50% of the entire graduating class of 2010, with a particularly high proportion from the schools of Science and Agricultural Sciences (70%). Our ground-breaking scholarship is passed on to our students through coursework and research projects with faculty members dedicated to producing a new cohort of scholars.

In order to establish a world presence and develop true research excellence, Nagoya University has international liaison offices, research and educational bases and a technology transfer office around the world. These stations are strategically positioned to recruit top-level students and teaching staff, organize academic exchanges, host workshops, interact with world-level researchers, learn about different countries’ educational systems, and promote Nagoya University around the globe.
