Nagoya University’s oldest school, the School of Medicine has its roots in a hospital and medical training facility that was founded by Aichi Prefecture’s predecessor, the Nagoya Domain, in 1871. Building on this 150 years of history, the School of Medicine operates on four basic principles:
- To develop cutting-edge medical research that will contribute to an improvement in the health of mankind and to create new medical technology.\
- To foster medical researchers and medical professionals who respect medical ethics, and take pride in contributing to the welfare of mankind.\
- To enhance the quality of local medical services in cooperation with local institutions, both in medical research and medical care, and to improve medical care standards in Japan and the world.\
- To develop an open system to utilize sources of talented people which can serve as the hub for open medical research and medical care.
Occupying the Tsurumai and Daiko campuses, the School of Medicine offers courses in medicine and health sciences including nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and medical laboratory science. It also operates the Nagoya University Hospital, a fully-equipped 1,080 bed teaching and research hospital which also serves as one of the key medical centers in the Tokai region.
