Nagoya University offers flexible language options for international students, with programs available in both English and Japanese depending on your academic goals.

## English language requirements

### G30 International Programs (taught entirely in English)

For undergraduate and graduate degree programs taught entirely in English:

- **English proficiency test is required** for most applicants
- **Exemption is available** for students who completed four or more consecutive years of secondary education where English was the primary language of instruction
- **Accepted tests include:**
  - TOEFL
  - IELTS
  - Duolingo English Test
- **No Japanese proficiency is required** for admission to these programs

### Exchange programs (NUPACE)

For exchange students participating in the Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange:

- **No Japanese language requirement** to participate
- **English proficiency requirement** for non-native English speakers:
  - TOEFL: 550 (CBT=213; iBT=79)
  - TOEIC: 730
  - IELTS: overall band score of 5.5
  - Or equivalent scores
- **Exemption available**for students studying full-time at universities where English is the medium of instruction

## Japanese language requirements

### Regular Japanese-taught programs

For students who want to take regular university courses taught in Japanese:

- **JLPT N1 level required** (Japanese Language Proficiency Test level 1)
- Alternative equivalent qualifications may be accepted

### Specialized programs

**Intensive Programme in Advanced Japanese:**

- **JLPT N2 level minimum** required for enrollment

**NUPACE exchange students:**

- Students with **JLPT N1** may register for regular Japanese-taught courses
- Core NUPACE curriculum taught primarily in English
