The Global Learning Center invites graduate students at Kansai University, Chiba University and Tohoku University, to participate in a special seminar and discussion featuring Penn State researchers and graduate students from the Pennsylvania State University.\ \ ※The colloquium is part of the JIGE Project, an educational and human resource development initiative jointly led by Kansai University, Chiba University, and Tohoku University.\ \

| Overview | 1. Discussion Session Theme: The Next Millennium for Planet Earth: A Discussion Goals: Three professors and graduate students both from the U.S. and Japan will exchange their views and discuss three specific issues facing us humans today. The discussion will not be limited to geoscience, but will welcome input from different disciplines. We hope that the discussion will provide direction on the question, “How should we face the Earth in the next century?" Three professors will give an overview of each topic and lead the discussion. (1) Change in Climate and Environment (Discussion will be led by Prof. Lee Kump - The John Leone Dean in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the Pennsylvania State University) (2) Change in Ecosystem (Discussion will be led by Prof. Takeshi Kakegawa - Graduate School of Sciences, Tohoku University) (3) Facing Serious Natural Disasters (Discussion will be led by Prof. Kevin Furlong - Department of Geosciences, the Pennsylvania State University) * Prof. Furlong will be joining online from the U.S. 2. Special Seminar Title : Biogeophysical Tipping Points Speaker: Prof. Lee Kump (The John Leone Dean in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the Pennsylvania State University) Prof. Lee Kump will discuss some of his work on tipping points in Earth history, the role of the biota in climate and environmental feedbacks, and what that might mean for the future. Prof. Kump and his students, postdocs and research associates use a variety of analytical and numerical modeling approaches to investigate the nature of environmental and biotic change on all time scales.
