FGL Courses

The Future Global Leadership (FGL) program at Tohoku University offers three outstanding undergraduate degree courses that are taught in English:

All three courses provide curriculums that help students to build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of their chosen fields and to encounter the very latest cutting-edge research. Eligibility

Basic Qualifications

You must fulfill, or expect to fulfill by September 30, 2026, (A) and (B) below, and any one of 1), 2), or 3) from (C).

(A) Your nationality is, in principle, other than Japanese. *If you are not a Japanese citizen but hold a Permanent Residence permit, you cannot apply.
(B) The total amount of education you received in a school conforming to the Japanese educational system, whether in Japan or overseas, is six years or less.
(C) 1) You have completed a 12-year curriculum of school education outside Japan, or have an equivalent education as specified by the Minister of Education of Japan. 2) You have a qualification such as IB, GCE A-Levels, Abitur, etc.  3) Your academic abilities are judged to be equal or superior to those of a high school graduate upon individual screening of qualifications by Tohoku University and you are at least 18 years old.

*Japanese citizens who wish to apply should contact us to confirm that they are eligible before applying.

Academic Requirements

Standardized Examination Scores AMC and IMAC-U: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. AMB: Mathematics, plus choose two among Physics, Chemistry or Biology *Choose from GCE A-Levels, IB, ACT with/without Writing, AP, EJU or other national standardized examinations. * We are able to accept combination scores on multiple tests. (e.g. ACT Science + GCE-A Level Mathematics)
Official English Test Score TOEFL iBT®(including Home Edition): 79+, or IELTS™ Academic: (including IELTS Online) 6.0+ *Score must be from a test dated October 2024 or later. *The conditions for exemptions from the English test score can be found in the Application Guide through the "How to Apply". [TOEFL, TOEFL iBT, TOEFL ITP, and TOEIC are registered trademarks of Educational Testing Service (ETS).]

* Please send the examination scores such as ACT, TOEFL iBT to Tohoku University via each system for your application.

* You will be able to take EJU and ACT on the following dates. They may/may not change. Please check the official websites for the official dates.

Fees/Support

Fees

Entrance and tuition fees for undergraduate courses are as follows :

Application Fee JPY 5,000 (Paid once for the application/examination)
Entrance Fee (Admission Fee) JPY 282,000 (Paid once for entrance to Tohoku University)
Tuition Fees JPY 267,900 (Paid every semester for tuition. Payment deadline will be announced after acceptance)

If fees and tuition are revised during the admissions process or during the program, the new fees will be applied from the time of revision. The above do not include any bank transfer for handling fees. For details, check Tohoku University fees and tuition.

Financial Support

Sendai is a relatively inexpensive city compared with other major cities in Japan. Each month you should budget about JPY 36,000 for UH Aobayama (dormitory) fees including rent/maintenance/rental items, and an additional JPY 70,000 to 80,000 for other living expenses.

Tohoku University actively supports the academic life of international students in the FGL courses by providing scholarships to those with exceptional academic abilities.

Of those who indicate that they wish to receive a scholarship at the time of their application, 8 applicants (total for the 3 courses) who achieved excellent scores on the entrance examination and meet the criteria specified by MEXT, will be recommended for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship by Tohoku University.

The other students will be recommended for the President Scholarship and will be eligible to apply for the MEXT Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students. For further details, please check the Tohoku University scholarships.

* All you need to do for apply for those scholarships is to check the box "I prefer to receive scholarship" when you fill out an application from online. Successful applicants who achieve excellent scores at the whole entrance examination process will be recommended as scholars.

* The scholarship program by "Fast Retailing Foundation" has become available for high school students from Vietnam who will apply to the FGL course at Tohoku University. Please refer to the detailed information on their website.

Housing

Tohoku University will provide rooms at the University House Aobayama dormitory to all FGL students for the first two years. From the third year, students will need to live in private apartments. Details about the dormitory and support for finding private apartments can be found at the URLs below:

Individual Session

Upon request, we are happy to schedule an online information session for an individual school or organization between 10 am and 7pm (JST) on weekdays. The session includes overviews of Tohoku University and the each course's application procedures, and scholarship opportunities (about 1 hour).

FGL Community

FGL community is voluntarily initiated by current FGL students for all current students, alumni, and academic and administrative staff.
