Plants have been used in medical treatments throughout human history, and herbalism is still used widely today. They can be used directly for medicinal purposes, or as plant-derived compounds in pharmaceutical drugs. There are also plants grown for their medicinal properties use in Japanese herbalism.
The Tohoku University Medicinal plant Garden cultivates approximately 1,200 medicinal plants. The plants are used for research in developing new medicines, and as teaching materials.
