## Imagining futures in which Indigenous peoples thrive

The Global Indigenous Futures Research Centre at Macquarie University investigates the complexities of Indigenous life, ingenuity and identity. Together, we explore possibilities and opportunities for Indigenous futures.

We create positive impact by sharing this research with Indigenous peoples around the world.

[The Global Indigenous Futures Research Centre](https://www.globalindigenousfutures.com/) is based in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University on the lands of the Wallumattagal people of the Dharug Nation.

Led by [Distinguished Professor Bronwyn Carlson](https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/950cf050-5b72-4533-b45b-7a87606df862), the centre is a site for collaboration in research, teaching, and community building. We bring together Indigenous researchers, graduate research students and allies from across the globe.

### Our research

We conduct research within three key themes:

1. **Future worlds:** Exploring what futures for Indigenous people might look like.
2. **Intimacies:** Investigating the complexity of Indigenous life and identity.
3. **Digital futures:** Examining the ways in which Indigenous people use technology.

### About the centre

The centre was initially established as the Forum for Indigenous Research Excellence (FIRE) in 2015. After significant growth and success, it was reestablished in 2021 as the Centre for Global Indigenous Futures, reflecting a shift toward a more globally connected and focused research agenda.

Today, the centre is a site for collaboration in research, teaching, and community building.

We aim to:

- explore how Indigenous peoples and communities are imagining their futures
- centre Indigenous peoples, knowledges and practices
- challenge dominant research paradigms
- build world-leading collaborative research capacity that is Indigenous-led and sustainable
- ensure a continuity of research training, development, application and investment in Indigenous peoples and communities
- provide pathways for Indigenous students to Higher Degree Research
- strengthen the connections between Indigenous scholars and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia and Indigenous communities internationally.

### Graduate research opportunities

The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures is committed to supporting Indigenous graduate research students (enrolled or considering enrolling in a Masters or Doctoral program). Macquarie University offers a range of scholarships, pathways and opportunities to Indigenous scholars.

The Indigenous Graduate Research Students Internship program at Macquarie University aims to build capacity and demystify the academy for future Indigenous scholars. The aim of the internship is to:

- provide Indigenous GRS’s (future academics) with the knowledge of academic language, process, and procedure
- build high quality teaching capacity in Indigenous GRS candidates
- develop candidates’ research portfolio and familiarity with research opportunities
- develop candidates’ curriculum vitae and employability in academia
- strengthen Indigenous GRS and academic networks across the globe.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples interested in undertaking research degrees may be eligible for our deadly Indigenous Research Excellence Scholarships:

- Masters of Research scholarship is valued $38,854 per annum.
- PhD scholarship is valued at $40,854 per annum.
