Clinical trials for a wide range of conditions

The Macquarie University Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is an integral part of our research-oriented Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences and the Macquarie University Hospital.

Clinical trials are used to gather information on how effective and safe a drug or device is for humans, with the results being used to possibly register the drug or device in Australia and worldwide.

About us

Macquarie’s CTU currently has nearly 200 active clinical trials across a wide range of conditions including cancer, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological diseases.

To deliver timely access for patients to novel therapies, the trials at CTU draw on:

Signing up for a clinical trial

Clinical trials are considered to be part of best-practice medicine and are one of many options for the treatment of a disease or illness.

At Macquarie University CTU we undertake trials to investigate the use of new drug therapies and medical devices, as well as find out better ways to use treatments that are already approved.

If you decide to be involved in a clinical trial, you will:

If you wish to participate in a clinical trial it is important to speak with your treating specialist or GP to see if there are current trials for which you are suitable.

A hospital with a thriving clinical trials unit provides the best international standard of cutting-edge care.

Good for patients

When you refer your patients for a clinical trial, they benefit from:

Clinical trials enhance the care of all patients in an institution, not just those in the trial. The ‘ripple effect’ of having a clinical trials unit leads to better trained medical and nursing staff and improved standards throughout the organisation.

Good for Australia

Clinical trials are also good for Australia. They reduce the cost of health care to the public because the care is paid for by the sponsors, who are usually international pharmaceutical companies. Clinical trials are a source of income for the Australian economy, over and above the supply of the study agent.

Macquarie University CTU is uniquely positioned to leverage both:

With our world-renowned investigators from the faculty and a team of dedicated clinical trial coordinators and administrative staff, Macquarie CTU trials are performed reliably, effectively, efficiently and to high-quality standards.
