Apply directly to come to Macquarie on an Exchange program
Follow our step-by-step guide to apply directly to attend Macquarie on an exchange program for one or two semesters.
Pre-select your units and check their prerequisites in our Course Handbook, making sure your course isn't listed as a restricted unit for Exchange students.
The first step to going on an exchange program is to consult your home university’s exchange office. The exchange program is a tuition waived program that allow a bilateral exchange of students between two universities. Therefore, you must first be accepted by your home university’s exchange office and then nominated to participate in the program with us.
Only after you have been successfully chosen by your home university to participate in the exchange program can you proceed to apply directly to Macquarie for admission.
- Complete the online application.
- Upload certified copies of your passport, English language proficiency (if applicable) and academic transcripts.
Your application will be assessed by our Admissions team. If you meet the entry requirements, you will be issued an offer letter. Offers will be made on a rolling basis.
Your offer letter will contain information on the program and the compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) fees, along with instructions on how to accept and pay the program deposit.
Return your signed Offer acceptance with your proof of OSHC payment and any other payment of fees indicated in your Letter of Offer.
- Once we've received your offer acceptance, we'll issue you with a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE).
- Apply for your student visa via the Department of Home Affairs with your COE. Visa applicants should refer to the Document Checklist Tool to find out which documents need to be attached to their visa application and acceptable English language tests to satisfy the visa requirements.
Note: The International Tuition Fee Refund policy will apply to most refunds. If you're applying to Macquarie University through a program provider, contact the program administrators for refund policy information.
Accessing student systems after acceptance
After receiving your COE and setting up your student ID and password, you will have access to all Macquarie student systems.
Select your Macquarie University units
As an Exchange student at Macquarie University, you can enrol in any available unit indicated on our Open Access Units List.
If you wish to enrol in units that have prerequisites (what we call Approval Required Units), you need to apply for a Special Approval (Waiver). You can check the requisites for your units of choice in the Course Handbook.
Make sure your unit selections aren’t on the Closed Units List, which contains all units that are prohibited for Study Abroad and Exchange students.
*See Understanding Units for more information on the above unit types for Study Abroad and Exchange students.
Follow the advice below to ensure a smooth process.
- Submit Special Approval requests:
- for several units so that you have options in case you do not receive approval for some of them,
- as soon as possible and before the commencement of the session.
- Make sure your home institution has approved of your choice of units before enrolling.
