About

The Bio-Sensing and Bio-Sensors group is a part of the Research Institute of Science and Technology (RISE) under the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It is an independent and interdisciplinary research group that involves people from different backgrounds. This alliance of various fields leads to innovations and creative environments by incorporating numerous experiences and knowledge of students and members. To develop Bio-IS (Biomedical Instruments/Sensors), various departments of Medical/Health and Engineering Colleges will be developing the correlations between the materials and human responses.

Goals and Objectives

The mission of this research group is to build a high-tech laboratory with advanced equipment to design and fabricate a bio-IS and process its measurement to estimate the bio behavior of a human being. The objective of this research group can be summarized as follows:

• Develop, design, and fabricate new IS for bio-medical application.
• Investigate some new micro/nanocomposite materials behavior and how to use them in sensing human responses to estimate his/her status.
• Develop correlations between the dynamics of the human body and the material properties to develop a bio-IS that can measure them effectively and efficiently.
• Develop micro/nano IS that can be wearable and be small to invasively measure bio-responses.
• Study the traditional signal processing/estimation techniques performance in such application and develop new methods if needed.
• Optimize the IS parameters and control its behavior.
• Develop AI (Machine/Deep Learning) models for ailment detection and signal processing.

History

Members are already involved with the research group branches, as several works in biosensors, micro/nanomaterials, and estimation techniques were conducted. However, more equipment and devices are required to verify some theoretical concepts for newly developed devices, and hence, develop more advanced IS. Some works are proposed as grants, patents, and research for now.

Lines of Research

Currently, there are three main streams for this research group (will expand in the future):

• Designing the IS for bio-medical applications.
• Micro/Nanomaterial for fabricating the IS.
• Estimation and filtering for the measurement signal.
• Using AI for biomedical data analysis.

Specific lines of research priority of the group

• Develop new bio-micro/nano IS to measure human body responses.
• Derive correlations between newly developed micro/nanomaterials and human dynamic responses.
• Examine, and if needed develop, new materials that be safe and fast.
• Apply/develop signal processing and estimation techniques to maximize the data obtained from the IS.
• Obtain a product that can be used nationally and internationally.

Highlights

The Bio-Sensing (BS) group includes Bio-Instrumentation,Bio-Measurements,Signal Processing,Estimation,Fabrication,Filtering, etc., which basically involves Design, Fabrication, Applications, Processing, and Estimation of the product.

NATURE OF THE GROUP's RESEARCH

The nature of this group is interdisciplinary. People from different departments and colleges are working in developing and integrating their knowledge to develop a product which is a bio-IS. Medical/Health and Engineering will be developing the correlations between the materials and human responses. Mechanical and Electrical engineering will be working in developing the IS, and Mechatronics and Electrical will develop the signal processing/estimation techniques.

BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY

The group will work on developing bio-ISs that will help in monitoring the health of any human being, especially those that need special care. The idea is to create a non-invasive, simple, human-body friendly, long-lasting, wearable, flexible IS to monitor human bio-responses and status like temperature, pressure, O2, blood pressure, sugar level, etc. The end part of the group work will be devices that help in improving life and reduces health risks.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO BE OFFERED BY THE GROUP

• Offering some courses in instrumentation, sensors, signal processing, health monitoring, estimation, etc.
• Attract graduate students to bio-medical/mechatronics applications.
• Collaborate interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary with other research groups.
• Research opportunities in the elevated branches.
• Contact with industries and markets to support the end-products and market them nationally and internationally.

1. Collaboration between MOHAP, UOS, and AUS to identify "The Cardiovascular Health Research Priorities in The United Arab Emirates" – expected outcome:

• Publication: The Cardiovascular Health Research Priorities In The United Arab Emirates - Submitted to Global Heart Journal.
• MOHAP report and position statement

2. Collaboration with Cleveland Clinic – Abu Dhabi: Synthesizing core nursing skills to support behavioral-based interviews for nurses in the UAE: A nominal group study. To improve and develop the recruitment and selection criteria for new nursing staff.
